Description
Yuma Gojou, a third-year at Odachi High, was once a delinquent leader whose gang seized the school's sumo dojo, destroying captain Shinya Ozeki's ring to use it as their hangout. His arrogance originated from his reputation as Daichi High's strongest student and his past as a junior high Kanto regional karate champion. Expelled from his karate dojo for violence, he embraced delinquency until confronting Hinomaru Ushio.

Challenged by Hinomaru to reclaim the dojo, Yuma set unfair rules: Hinomaru must endure 10 minutes of strikes undefended. Though Yuma lasted over 15 minutes, bloodying his fists on Hinomaru's resilience, a single sumo technique (buchikamashi) defeated him. This loss humbled Yuma, triggering nightmares and a resolve to join the sumo club to surpass Hinomaru. He apologized to Ozeki, though lingering guilt initially hampered his performance.

Standing 186 cm tall and weighing 87 kg, Yuma possesses a muscular build suited for sumo despite a lean frame, crowned by distinctive white spiky hair. Academically gifted, he ranks 18th among approximately 320 students and studies calculus, contradicting his delinquent image. He is fiercely protective of his younger sister Reina, frequently intervening in her life even into adulthood.

In sumo, Yuma employs a thrusting style (oshi-zumō) adapted from karate, emphasizing rapid strikes to force opponents out. His techniques feature the "Open Hand Lunge Punch" (kaishuu) and "Castle Break Punch," incorporating feints and foot sweeps. Early weaknesses included over-reliance on upper-body strength causing imbalance if opponents retreated, and close-range vulnerability—particularly to mawashi grabs. Training under coach Kirihito Tsuji improved his lower-body stability and agility through boat balance drills and precision strikes at dangling ping-pong balls. He also reconciled with his former karate teacher, Shiho Takani, who initially rejected him for his delinquency but accepted him after witnessing his remorse and desire for atonement.

Key matches chart Yuma's development: early tournament losses from grappling inexperience; a victory using long-range thrusts following Hinomaru's advice; and a semi-final defeat in the Kanto Newcomer Tournament against Sosuke Kuze, who exploited his mawashi weakness. During Interhigh preliminaries, he refined his karate integration, utilizing techniques like "Twist and Press" (makibuse) and overcoming past rival Kanamori in a thrusting battle. His superhuman stamina is evident in enduring 15-minute punching sessions and completing 300 shiko stomps.

Post–high school, Yuma attends Eigadai University, continuing sumo while studying medicine under Dr. Kanie to become a sports physician. His goal evolves from defeating Hinomaru to supporting athletes' health, reflecting his ongoing redemption.
