Description
Kano Akihira, known professionally as Ookanehira, is a prominent character in the series. A student at Tottori Hakurou High School and member of its sumo club, he stands 189 cm tall and weighs 114 kg, with blonde hair and brown eyes. His imposing physical presence is often marked by the school's dark blue mawashi featuring a light green stripe. He wears soft contact lenses outside competitions but switches to glasses.

His personality presents a complex contradiction: outwardly dismissive of sumo and reluctant in interviews, he conceals a deep-seated hatred of losing. This stems from witnessing numerous promising wrestlers' careers end in disappointment, including his father's failure to achieve yokozuna status. Akihira harbors significant resentment over consistently being treated as second-best, particularly compared to Shido Tennoji, and rarely receiving acknowledgment as a potential national champion. This frustration fuels reckless and dangerous behavior during matches. Despite this, he possesses intense loyalty to his team and father, driven by a desire to shield them from the pain of defeat he has observed.

As a wrestler, Akihira employs a counter-attacking style featuring a distinctive half-stance. This technique allows him to grab opponents' mawashi with one hand while maintaining enough height to feint charges and create throwing opportunities. A critical vulnerability in this stance is the exposure of his chest to rapid strikes, a weakness exploited by opponents like Chihiro Kunisaki and Tenma Hikage using their "Flash Strike" techniques. His physical strength and tactical approach make him formidable, though emotional volatility sometimes undermines his effectiveness.

His background reveals a connection to sumo through his father, the coach of Tottori Hakurou's club. Akihira's perspective on the sport is shaped by its perceived cruelty; he believes victory is the only metric validating hard work, having seen teams' dreams shattered in moments despite years of training. This outlook fuels his single-minded focus on winning and aversion to defeat. During high school, he participates in the national Inter High Tournament, facing Chihiro Kunisaki in the semifinals. Despite adopting his "Killer Stance" and aggressively attempting throws, he is defeated when Chihiro utilizes a copied version of Tenma Hikage's techniques combined with raw strength to force him out.

After high school, Akihira pursues a professional sumo career under Asahigawa Stable. His development continues into adulthood, competing in the sport's upper echelons. During a critical September tournament, he qualifies for a playoff featuring four wrestlers with 13–2 records. In this high-stakes environment, he loses to the Mongolian yokozuna Jinou. The defeat triggers a visible emotional collapse, highlighting his ongoing struggle with the psychological burden of competition and his history of being overshadowed, underscoring the tension between his relentless drive and its emotional toll.

Outside sumo, Akihira enjoys swimming and cooking. A notable habit is his ritual of preparing large batches of karaage (double-fried chicken) after losses, experimenting with new flavors. He reacts strongly if anyone steals a piece before the second frying, a quirk even observed by his stablemates, adding a relatable layer contrasting with his competitive intensity.
