OVA
Description
Raine Sage, a half-elf and protective older sister to Genis Sage, faced abandonment by their parents in Sylvarant via the Otherworldly Gate at age eleven, compelling her to raise infant Genis alone. This responsibility forged her maturity and fierce guardianship. Persistent discrimination as half-elves led them to pose as full elves after settling in Iselia five to six years before the main events, where Raine became the village schoolteacher.

Her unresolved trauma includes aquaphobia from falling off a ship during her family's escape from Sybak's Imperial Research Academy, which pursued her exceptional intellect. Later, during Sylvarant's regeneration quest, Raine discovered her mother Virginia in Exire, suffering amnesia and delusions post-abandonment. Initial rage transformed into understanding upon reading Virginia's diary, revealing the act as protective.

Raine risked fatal structural collapse operating a machine to ensure Lloyd Irving's passage against Mithos, declaring faith in his discrimination-free ideal. Her survival relied on Kratos or Zelos's intervention based on prior choices. She developed romantic feelings for Lloyd, subtly expressed in Flanoir where she proposed future travels. If mutual affection prevailed, she accompanied him post-conflict to find his hometown and collect Exspheres, beginning a relationship.

In the OVA's Tethe'alla arc, Raine shielded Colette Brunel from seal guardians, contrasting the game where Colette fought directly. The adaptation omitted her physical discipline toward Lloyd and Genis but retained her strategic role, including sacrificial plans discussed with Regal Bryant.

Post-conflict, Raine advocated for half-elf acceptance worldwide. In Dawn of the New World, she investigated Lloyd's disappearance after the Kharlan Tree incident. She encountered Emil Castagnier and Marta Lualdi at Martel Temple while tracking her student Paul, rescued them from a monster at Iselia Human Ranch, disciplined Paul, and joined their quest regarding Lloyd. Reuniting with Genis at Triet Ruins, her enthusiasm for ancient ruins surfaced. In Izoold, she aided Regal Bryant's exoneration and provided him a letter analyzing Emil's memory anomalies before resuming her independent search for Lloyd.

Her personality merged intellectual curiosity—particularly for archaeology and ancient artifacts—with stern professionalism as an educator, tempered by deep loyalty to allies and an unyielding drive to end racial discrimination. Her growth involved reconciling trauma, combating prejudice through action, and evolving from solitary protector to embracing interdependence and emotional bonds.
