Description
Raine Sage is one of the main characters of Tales of Symphonia the Animation: The United World Episode, the final arc in the anime adaptation of the Tales of Symphonia story. She is a young half-elf who serves as the schoolteacher of the village of Iselia and is the elder sister of Genis Sage. Born in the world of Tethe'alla, Raine was sent to Sylvarant through the Otherworldly Gate by her parents to escape the severe discrimination against half-elves and to keep her from being exploited by the Imperial Research Academy, which took an interest in her prodigious intellect. To survive in Iselia, she concealed her true heritage and presented herself and Genis as elves. Her parents abandoned her and her brother at the gate, which forced Raine to take on the role of both elder sister and mother figure to Genis from a young age.

In personality, Raine is generally calm, cautious, and levelheaded, and she is respected for her extensive knowledge of history, archaeology, and related fields. That composure disappears when she encounters ruins or ancient artifacts, as she becomes intensely passionate and launches into lengthy, enthusiastic lectures that are difficult to interrupt. As a teacher, she is strict and demanding, and she does not hesitate to scold or even physically discipline her students or her brother when they misbehave, yet she is also kind and motherly beneath her stern exterior. Her sensitivities emerge in small ways away from her areas of expertise, most notably in cooking, where her attempts produce notoriously unpalatable food that she takes personal offense at when criticized. She also carries a deep fear of water, a lasting trauma from nearly drowning during her family's escape from Tethe'alla.

Raine's motivations center on protecting those close to her, especially Genis, and on using her knowledge to aid others. When Colette embarks on the journey of regeneration as the Chosen, Raine joins the party to guide, protect, and support her, and her expertise in ruins and history becomes essential to the group's progress. As the story unfolds, her own past comes to the forefront. The revelation that she and Genis are half-elves, along with the painful history of their flight from Tethe'alla, forces her to confront the prejudice she has hidden from all her years in Iselia. Her development is marked by moving from concealment of her identity toward facing it with resolve, and her experiences become a driving force in her determination to see a world where half-elves are no longer scorned.

Her key relationships include her close bond with Genis, whom she has raised and protected as both sister and mother; her sense of responsibility toward Colette as the Chosen; and her stern but caring connection with Lloyd, who was one of her students in Iselia. Through these bonds, she acts as the group's voice of reason and steady support, grounding the party with her knowledge and her unwavering concern for their well-being.

In battle, Raine wields a staff and serves as the group's healer, specializing in healing and support magic. She is also skilled in light-element offensive spells and in augmenting the abilities of her allies. Her high intelligence grants her strong magical defense and endurance, making her an indispensable member of the party even though her offensive capabilities are more limited. These abilities, coupled with her vast scholarly knowledge, define her as a protective and learned figure throughout the events of the United World Episode.
