Description
Genis Sage, a half-elf from Sylvarant, concealed his mixed heritage alongside his older sister Raine to live as pure-blooded elves in the human village of Iselia. Attending the local schoolhouse, he forged close friendships with Lloyd Irving and Colette Brunel. Despite his academic brilliance and prodigious magical aptitude, Genis developed an inferiority complex regarding Lloyd's physical courage, often masking it with sarcasm directed at Lloyd's perceived intellectual shortcomings.

He secretly visited the forbidden Iselia Human Ranch, befriending an elderly prisoner named Marble, whom he regarded as a grandmother. His actions there, including an attempt to defend Marble with Lloyd, inadvertently triggered a Desian retaliation that destroyed Iselia, leading to Lloyd's exile, which Genis shared out of guilt. He later implanted Marble's Exsphere onto his right hand as a memento and to enhance his magical combat abilities. In the animated adaptation, the attack is triggered by Desians observing Lloyd using an Exsphere at Martel Temple, altering the narrative context of Genis's motivations and guilt.

Joining Colette's Journey of Regeneration with Lloyd, Raine, and Kratos Aurion, Genis served as an offensive spellcaster specializing in elemental magic, particularly fire-based spells, relying on party members for protection during incantations. Discovering Tethe'alla and its advanced magitech initially fascinated him, but exposure to its severe systemic discrimination against half-elves, far worse than in Sylvarant, fueled deep-seated anger and hatred towards humanity, becoming a core conflict during the Tethe'alla arc. The animated adaptation covering this journey less extensively explored Genis's experiences with prejudice and inner turmoil, streamlined events like the route through Balacruf Mausoleum, and omitted specific encounters such as the battle against Grand Cardinal Magnius.

He formed a profound connection with Mithos Yggdrasill, another half-elf boy of comparable intelligence who shared experiences of persecution and sisterly guardianship. Their friendship highlighted a symbolic divergence: both faced similar trauma and bitterness, but where Mithos embraced vengeance and sought to impose his will on the world through Cruxis, Genis ultimately rejected hatred. He acknowledged his anger but consciously chose forgiveness and Lloyd's ideal of coexistence. Genis also developed romantic feelings for Presea Combatir, a lumberjack whose aging was halted by a Cruxis Crystal.

Two years later, physically matured and taller, Genis was deeply concerned about Lloyd's status following the world's regeneration. He and Raine separated to search for Lloyd. He encountered Emil Castagnier and Marta Lualdi at the Triet Ruins, assisting them despite their initial hostility towards Lloyd. Genis expressed a lighthearted desire for Raine to acknowledge his increased height, displayed sadness witnessing Lloyd's antagonistic behavior, assisted Emil's party in Izoold, and ultimately reunited with them permanently. He confided in Emil about criticism faced after the Kharlan Tree incident, expressed gratitude for Lloyd's support, encouraged Emil's friendship with Lloyd, and maintained his idealism for a discrimination-free world. If selected in a key decision moment, he chose to journey alongside Lloyd.

Personality-wise, Genis combined intellectual pride and sarcastic wit, particularly directed at Lloyd, with underlying loyalty, kindness, and dependability. Childhood anti-half-elf prejudice left lasting scars, manifesting later as cynicism and hostility towards humans, though he worked to overcome it. Despite his scholarly nature, he possessed considerable emotional resilience forged through adversity. He was an exceptional cook, rivaled only by Regal Bryant within the group. His relationship with Raine was central, marked by mutual reliance stemming from shared persecution and displacement after being abandoned by their mother at the Otherworldly Gate for their safety.
