Hotsuma Renjou is a Zweilt guardian wielding Kami no Koe (God's Voice), granting him the power to generate and control fire. His ring summons the curved blade Masterstroke (Divine Skill) for battle. Abandoned by his parents as a child and labeled a monster due to his uncontrolled flames, he faced deep isolation. His parents contacted him only to demand money. A pivotal incident saw him accidentally burn classmates while trying to protect someone, leading to further ostracization. Overwhelmed by guilt and self-loathing, he attempted suicide. His childhood friend Shuusei intervened, resulting in severe burn scars on Shuusei's body. This left Hotsuma with persistent guilt and a fear of harming those close to him. Hotsuma exhibits a short-tempered, impulsive, and outwardly aggressive personality, masking deeper vulnerabilities. Despite this, he is fiercely loyal and protective, especially of Shuusei. He struggles with depression and self-worth, frequently blaming himself for past mistakes. His bond with Shuusei is central; they share unwavering trust, and Hotsuma views Shuusei as his primary reason for living. Their connection spans multiple reincarnations, including a past life where they were married (with Shuusei as female) and attempted to have children to increase Zweilt numbers. Initially distrustful of Yuki Giou, the bearer of God's Light, due to unresolved past life tensions, Hotsuma gradually develops respect after witnessing Yuki's empathy and kindness. Yuki's ability to calm Hotsuma's flames and alleviate his guilt proves pivotal, leading Hotsuma to apologize for his initial hostility and openly support Yuki. During the Kyoto arc, Hotsuma confronts his fear of failure regarding Yuki's expectations, eventually bowing to Yuki and offering emotional support during a crisis. Hotsuma's development intensifies when Shuusei is kidnapped by Opast Ashley. Shuusei, overwhelmed by despair, willingly enters a death-like sleep, believing Hotsuma no longer needs him. Hotsuma uses Kami no Koe to command Shuusei to "live," reviving him and reinforcing their inseparable bond. This act solidifies Hotsuma's acceptance of his powers and his commitment to protect others. Outside combat, Hotsuma copes with stress through video games, often playing late into the night in Shuusei's room. He also talks in his sleep. Physically, he is tall and slender with blond hair and green eyes (alternatively described as gold), frequently noted for his attractiveness. His birthday is August 1st.
