Description
Yūma Gojō is a third-year Odachi High student initially presented as a delinquent and former Kanto regional junior high karate champion. Renowned as Daichi High's strongest student, he seized the sumo club's dojo, destroyed its ring, and bullied captain Shinya Ozeki. His arrogance shattered after Hinomaru Ushio endured his punches for over 15 minutes before knocking him out with a sumo counter. This defeat led Yūma to reflect, apologize to Ozeki, and join the sumo club determined to eventually beat Ushio.
Physically, Yūma stands 186 cm tall, weighs 87 kg, and has white spiky hair. Despite his delinquent image, he ranks 18th academically among roughly 320 students and studies calculus, demonstrating high intelligence. He remains protective of his younger sister Reina into adulthood. Reformed, he dedicates himself to sumo but carries guilt over his past treatment of Ozeki, occasionally hindering his match performance.
His sumo style integrates karate, emphasizing oshi-zumō (pushing/thrusting) to maintain distance. Signature moves include rapid karate-like thrusts: the "Kaishu" (open-hand thrust) to disrupt balance, the "Castle Break Punch" using a leg trip feint, and the "Deformed Three-point Attack," a belly-to-back throw with a neck grab. Early reliance on upper-body strength creates vulnerability to evasive opponents who disrupt his balance. Additional weaknesses include low agility, weak foot/toe strength, and helplessness if opponents secure his loincloth in close combat.
His development features rigorous training. Starting with only 260 shiko stomps, he reached 300 during the Sumo Recruitment arc. Coach Kirihito Tsuji addressed his upper-body dependency with targeted drills like thrusting suspended ping-pong balls to improve lower-body stability. Yūma also sought out his former karate teacher, Shiho Takani, who initially rejected him due to his past. After expressing his desire to atone, she taught him sumo-adaptable techniques like "Twist and Press" and "Reel-in Lunge Strike," enhancing his close-quarters anticipation.
Competitively, Yūma faces setbacks and successes. Early District Preliminary losses came from targeting loincloths, prompting him to refine his thrusting style for wins. He reached the Kanto Newcomer Tournament semifinals but lost to Sōsuke Kuze after a prolonged thrusting battle ended with Kuze seizing his loincloth. During the Interhigh Preliminary arc, he honed multi-directional thrusts and the karate-based "Makibuse" to repel strikes. His strategic growth was evident in a rematch against Ishigami High's Tsuyoshi Kanamori, using foot sweeps and feints, though he ultimately lost. At the National High School Sumo Championship, he defeated opponents like Batmünkh Batbayar using thrust combinations and the "Partial Lunge: Castle Break Punch," but fell to Jin Yomoda in the finals.
After graduation, Yūma enrolled at Eiga University, continued sumo, and pursued a medical degree under Dr. Kanie to become a sports physician, aligning with his commitment to atonement and growth beyond his delinquent past.
