Kyosuke Higuchi serves as the head of Technology Development at Yotsuba Corporation and is one of its eight executives. A graduate of Waseda University's Political Science department, his father is president of Yotsuba Heavy Industrial. He possesses dark-brown hair and eyes, typically wears a black suit, and frequently displays a wide, unsettling grin. Higuchi is left-handed and holds a Five-Dan rank in kendo.
He ascends to become the third wielder of a Death Note, receiving it from the Shinigami Rem. She selected him based on Light Yagami's directive to find a "greedy," "forceful," and "selfish" individual who would use it for personal advancement. Rem instructed him to conduct routine killings of criminals before pursuing his own goals. Higuchi then leverages the Death Note weekly within the Yotsuba Group to eliminate key figures from rival companies, bolstering Yotsuba's corporate dominance. While other executives suspect one among them is Kira, Higuchi's identity remains concealed until he kills fellow executive Arayoshi Hatori for a "careless outburst" during L's investigation.
His personality is defined by ambition, greed, and a callous disregard for others. Obsessed with elevating his social status and wealth, he employs the Death Note primarily for corporate gain, contrasting sharply with previous Kira users. He exhibits poor interpersonal skills, often insulting colleagues and displaying arrogance despite lacking their competence, which leads the Yotsuba Group to deduce he is Kira. He shows no remorse, exemplified when taunting Hatori before killing him and later attempting to sexually coerce Misa Amane into marriage upon learning she admires Kira.
Misa Amane, aided by Rem, tricks Higuchi into confessing his identity as Kira during a recorded encounter. When the Yotsuba Group betrays him and Matsuda exposes him on Sakura TV, Higuchi makes the Shinigami Eye Deal with Rem, sacrificing half his remaining lifespan to see names and lifespans. He evades police by killing an officer with the Eyes but is apprehended by a masked police blockade. To avoid capture, he attempts suicide, only to be disarmed by Watari's sniper shot from a helicopter. Forced into custody, he reveals the existence of Death Notes to the authorities. During the confrontation, Light Yagami touches the Death Note, regaining his memories as the original Kira, and uses a hidden Death Note scrap in his watch to kill Higuchi by inducing a heart attack.
In *Death Note Relight: Visions of a God*, Higuchi's role and fate align with his main series portrayal, incorporating no significant new scenes or alterations specific to his character. His actions have lasting repercussions: his arrest and the subsequent recovery of his Death Note provide critical information about the notebook's mechanics to Near, L's successor. This knowledge, combined with SPK agent Halle Lidner's personal vendetta against Higuchi for killing a friend, ultimately contributes to Kira's downfall years later.
