Soichiro Yagami, father of Light Yagami and Chief of Japan's National Police Agency, initially leads the Japanese Task Force hunting the mysterious serial killer Kira. A middle-aged man of above-average height, he wears rectangular spectacles and formal Western attire. His short, neatly combed black hair and mustache gray under the mounting stress of the investigation. He lives by a personal motto of "justice first, family later," a belief causing significant absences from home and later adopted by his son. His strong sense of duty and justice earns him deep respect from colleagues, demonstrated when he continues the Kira investigation even after the police force withdraws funding. When detective L suspects Light of being Kira, Soichiro's role as a detective clashes with his role as a father. Deeply offended and anxious, he nonetheless reluctantly agrees to L's unlawful plan to plant surveillance in the Yagami home to clear his family's name. The immense strain of this situation, combined with tireless work, causes him to collapse and require hospitalization. His commitment is further evidenced when, from his hospital bed, he commandeers a police truck to break into Sakura TV to retrieve tapes aired by the Second Kira and deliver them to L. He participates in a plan devised by L to test Light's innocence, which involves threatening to shoot his son with a gun loaded with blanks to see if Light would react as Kira. A significant moral conflict arises when his daughter, Sayu, is kidnapped by the mafia led by Mello. Forced to choose between his duty as a police officer and his duty as a parent, he trades the Death Note for his daughter's safety, stating he acts not as an officer but as Sayu's father. This decision leads to intense guilt and suicidal thoughts for compromising his principles. In a final effort to retrieve the Death Note, he makes the Shinigami Eye Deal with the Shinigami Ryuk, sacrificing half his remaining lifespan to see names and lifespans. During the subsequent raid on Mello's hideout, he learns Mello's real name but is fatally wounded in an explosion. Rushed to the hospital, he dies from his injuries. In his final moments, he sees his son's lifespan—visible because Light did not own a Death Note at that moment—and dies believing his son is innocent. In the film series, he lives to discover Light is Kira and confronts him, telling him his actions are far from justice. He later witnesses Light die in his arms and is called the best father L has ever seen. He chooses to preserve his family's positive memories of Light by telling them Light was killed by Kira. In the television drama adaptation, a prior incident where he was absent from his wife's deathbed creates a rift with Light, which becomes a motivating factor for Light's initial use of the Death Note to save his father from a hostage situation. Within the narrative of *Death Note Relight: Visions of a God*, his portrayal remains consistent with his original storyline, focusing on his internal conflict between his professional duties and his family, his unwavering sense of justice, and his tragic death believing in his son's innocence.
