Description
Kagerō Usui is the class president of class 2-He, though his position is largely overlooked due to his most defining characteristic: an exceptionally faint presence that makes him nearly invisible to teachers and classmates alike. His name is a direct reference to this condition, derived from the Japanese phrase kage ga usui, which translates to overshadowed or faint presence. The element usui within his name also serves as a nod to his thinning hairline and male pattern baldness.

Physically, Kagerō is consistently depicted wearing glasses and having black hair that progressively grows thinner over the course of his appearances. He typically combs his hair in an attempt to conceal his bald spot, and this act of covering is crucial because the exposure of this spot is the singular event that grants him momentary visibility and acknowledgment from others. When his hair covering slips and reveals the bald area, he briefly becomes perceptible to the world around him.

In terms of personality, Kagerō is self-conscious about his hair loss and makes efforts to hide it. He exhibits perverted inclinations, frequently leering at female students such as Kaere Kimura, though these actions generally go unnoticed due to his invisible nature. He nurtures a specific romantic interest in Kobushi Abiru. Additionally, he displays signs of emotional masochism, a trait first observable when he actively solicits additional insults from Chie Arai while she is criticizing his appearance.

His role within the story is that of a consistent background figure whose fleeting moments of presence are tied exclusively to the accidental revelation of his bald spot. There is no notable evolution or development of his character throughout the series, seasons, or OVAs, as his core traits of extreme imperceptibility and dependence on his physical characteristic for visibility persist without change. His key relationships include his unrequited crush on Abiru, his habit of staring at Kimura, and his peculiar interactions with Arai where he requests her insults. Kagerō's primary notable ability is not a skill in the traditional sense but rather his unique condition of near-total invisibility, a trait so profound that it defines his entire existence and his rare moments of being seen are treated as an extraordinary event.
