Description
Gobuta is a hobgoblin and a loyal subordinate of Rimuru Tempest, originating from the goblin village that Rimuru first encountered after being reincarnated. As one of the first goblins to receive a name from Rimuru, he evolved from a standard goblin into a hobgoblin. Unlike most of his kin who experienced dramatic physical changes upon evolution, Gobuta retained his original appearance, continuing to look like a small, childlike goblin with a round face, a trait that often leads others to underestimate his true abilities.

In terms of personality, Gobuta is generally portrayed as a carefree, lazy, and somewhat foolish individual who often acts as comic relief. He is a natural airhead, prone to impulsive actions and speaking in a casual, slang-filled manner. His seemingly lackadaisical attitude and tendency to find himself in trouble due to carelessness or inappropriate comments often exasperate his superiors, particularly Rimuru. However, this outer demeanor masks a surprisingly competent and shrewd individual. When a critical situation arises, especially in combat, Gobuta proves to be exceptionally capable, displaying refined tactical intuition, keen observation, and a genius-level aptitude for battle. He has a strong sense of loyalty and duty to his friends and the nation of Tempest, prioritizing their safety above all else.

Gobuta's motivations are rooted in his desire to serve Rimuru and protect the nation they have built together. Despite his laid-back nature, he takes his responsibilities seriously, particularly as the captain of the Goblin Riders, a cavalry unit that rides Tempest Wolves. His role evolves significantly from a seemingly disposable underling to a key figure in Tempest's military. He serves as the vice-commander and later captain of the Goblin Riders, and is one of the first students of Hakurou, the legendary kijin swordsman, under whom he hones his combat skills. His position allows him to be at the forefront of many of Tempest's major conflicts, where his unorthodox strategies and hidden talents come to the fore.

His key relationships define his role in the story. Gobuta shares a unique and informal bond with Rimuru, who grants him the privilege of speaking casually, a distinction that is a source of envy for other subordinates like Shion and Shuna. He has a crucial partnership with Ranga, the leader of the Tempest Wolves; through a unique skill, he can unite with Ranga to gain immense power, merging into a formidable magic wolf form. Hakurou serves as his strict but effective martial arts mentor, recognizing the latent genius within the seemingly foolish goblin. Furthermore, the demon lord Milim Nava takes an interest in him, subjecting him to harsh training that pushes his abilities to new heights.

Gobuta demonstrates notable development throughout the narrative. He transcends his initial role as the butt of jokes to become a respected and dependable warrior. Despite his species having no further natural evolutionary stages, his continuous training and combat experience allow him to grow exponentially in power and prestige, eventually being acknowledged as one of the strongest among the former goblins and even as one of the Four Heavenly Kings, albeit jokingly as the weakest among them. His combat ability is officially ranked at A- when fully equipped.

His notable abilities are extensive, defying his unimpressive physique. Gobuta is a genius on the battlefield, capable of perfectly replicating complex techniques like Shadow Movement simply by observing them once. His core abilities include Magic Perception, which grants him environmental awareness and the ability to understand any language; Thought Communication for telepathy; and Shadow Step, which allows him to move instantly between shadows. His signature power is his union with Ranga, which fuses their consciousness and physical forms, granting him access to Ranga's vast magical power and abilities, such as creating lightning storms and corrosive wind. This union elevates his attack potency and speed to extremely high levels, making him a formidable threat even to much stronger opponents. He has also developed resistances, such as to poison, which he unintentionally acquired after being forced to eat the notoriously lethal cooking of his ally, Shion.
