Description
Rinko Kōgyoku is a junior high school student from Takaragaseki City, an ordinary girl harboring many dreams alongside fears like acrophobia and shyness. Her life transforms upon discovering Ruby's Jewel Charm and encountering Keigo Tatewaki, who reveals his link to Jewel Land's magicians. He tasks her with finding Jewelpets scattered on Earth, a mission she accepts. Awakening Ruby using the Jewel Pocketbook, Rinko forms a team with friends Minami Asaoka and Aoi Arisugawa to retrieve the lost Jewelpets before antagonist Diana can intercept them.
She possesses hazelnut brown eyes and short red hair in the anime (brown in manga), typically dressed in a lime jacket over a white shirt with magenta lines, a dark grey skirt, rose-patterned long socks, and pastel brown shoes. A heart-shaped yellow hairclip and Ruby's Jewel Charm worn around her neck are consistent features.
Combining timidity with a strong sense of justice, Rinko initially doubts her abilities, like when preparing a school speech. She gradually develops confidence, especially after obtaining the Jewel Stick in episode 26. This item allows her to cast spells independently, though she struggles initially. Her determination to protect others drives her actions, even confronting personal risks like facing the brainwashing antagonist Dian.
Her romantic journey is significant. She clashes with neighbor Akira Nanase, exhibiting belligerent tension, but later develops mutual feelings for him. Concurrently, she becomes infatuated with Andy, later revealed as Dian in disguise. Dian exploits her wish for a "prince charming," manipulating her into a brainwashed wedding ceremony where he steals her Jewel Stick to threaten both worlds. Akira breaks the brainwashing with a kiss, solidifying their bond, leading to mutual confessions of love.
Rinko's magical abilities evolve. She first awakens Jewelpets using the phrase "Puri Puri Pururin Purirism! Open! Jewel Heart!" with the Jewel Pocketbook and Ruby. After gaining the Jewel Stick, she performs magic independently, albeit inconsistently. Her skills prove instrumental in pivotal battles, uniting her team to restore Dian and participating in giant monster confrontations.
Her background includes being childhood friends with Minami, who protected her during kindergarten, reinforcing her deep loyalty to friends. This loyalty is evident when she persuades the initially isolated Aoi to join their group by empathizing with her loneliness. Her family includes parents Mitsuo and Sayuri Kōgyoku.
Beyond her original series, Rinko appears in spin-off media. She makes a cameo via recorded video in *Jewelpet Magical Change* (episode 21b) and features in an alternate version in the film *Jewelpet the Movie: Sweets Dance Princess*, alongside characters from other *Jewelpet* continuities.
