Description
Xiahou Yuan serves as a military general under his paternal cousin, the warlord Cao Cao. His early life demonstrates a profound sense of familial duty, exemplified when he sacrificed his youngest son to save his deceased younger brother's orphaned daughter during a famine, underscoring his commitment to family obligations even in dire circumstances.

He joined Cao Cao's forces during the uprising against Dong Zhuo, initially holding positions as Major of Separate Command and Cavalry Commandant. Early administrative appointments as Administrator of Chenliu and Yingchuan commanderies established his foundational experience in governance and military affairs. Renowned for exceptional speed in mobilizing troops, his campaigns featured rapid movements and surprise tactics, leading to a saying within Cao Cao's army: "Xiahou Yuan travels 500 li in three days and 1,000 li in six days."

Xiahou Yuan participated in pivotal battles supporting Cao Cao's rise. He suppressed Yellow Turban remnants commanded by Xu He and Sima Ju in Jinan and Le'an, securing enemy supplies. He defeated the rebel Lei Xu in Lujiang Commandery and collaborated with Xu Huang to crush uprisings in Taiyuan Commandery, executing rebel leaders and dismantling their strongholds. His contributions extended to the critical Battle of Guandu against Yuan Shao, where he oversaw logistics and provisions, ensuring timely deliveries that bolstered army morale.

In western campaigns, Xiahou Yuan proved instrumental against rival warlords and tribal forces. He fought at the Battle of Tong Pass against the Ma Chao and Han Sui coalition and later pacified Di tribes in Yumi and Qian counties. Demonstrating strategic acumen during the defense of Liang Province, he ignored advice to await Cao Cao's orders and instead dispatched Zhang He with 5,000 troops to relieve Wei Kang under siege by Ma Chao. This decisive action forced Ma Chao's retreat and stabilized the region. Against Han Sui, he employed psychological warfare by attacking Qiang tribal homelands in Changli, compelling Han Sui's Qiang soldiers to abandon their posts to defend their families, isolating Han Sui's forces and leading to their defeat.

Appointed General Who Attacks the West, Xiahou Yuan assumed command of Cao Cao's Hanzhong campaign. His tenure ended at the Battle of Mount Dingjun, facing Huang Zhong of Liu Bei's forces. He was caught off-guard and killed in a surprise assault; historically and in adaptations, this death is dramatized during defensive preparations or a personal confrontation, marking a significant loss for Cao Cao's forces.

A master archer known for exceptional marksmanship, including hitting distant targets while bending backward, Xiahou Yuan's military style emphasized aggression and swift maneuvers. He was described as stern, inflexible, and prone to impulsive reactions under provocation. Cao Cao valued him deeply, considering him "as his limb" for his unwavering loyalty and combat effectiveness.

Throughout his service, Xiahou Yuan maintained close bonds within Cao Cao's faction, frequently collaborating with his cousin Xiahou Dun and forming effective partnerships with generals like Zhang He during western campaigns. His relationship with Cao Cao was rooted in mutual respect and a desire to repay Cao Cao's early intervention that saved him and Xiahou Dun from peril.
