Kanechika Umehara is a 34-year-old Contracted Monk of the Kōgon Sect, holding the rank of Sojo and overseeing one of its six districts. He possesses dark brown hair, black eyes, stands 1.73 meters tall, and weighs 76 kilograms. Originally contracted to the Shikabane Hime Touma Sawamiya (who enters dormancy during his active period), he later partners primarily with the non-canonical anime character, the Shikabane Hime Flesh Backbone.

Within the sect, Umehara commands significant respect for his expertise and role as a revered teacher for novice Contracted Monks. Despite his standing, he maintains neutrality in internal sect conflicts and prefers a reclusive lifestyle. His formidable power stems from exceptional spiritual energy, enabling him to sustain contracts with multiple Shikabane Himes simultaneously—a feat typically fatal for monks due to the immense "run" energy drain. In combat, he wields a bladed shakujō staff and is the sole practitioner of the specialized Shinken Ascala sword technique.

Umehara exhibits notable eccentricities. He shares a hobby of collecting "Moe" figurines and adult materials with the late monk Keisei Tagami. He frequently engages in voyeuristic behavior, such as attempting to observe Shikabane Himes during private moments like bathing. While Touma disapproved of these actions, Flesh Backbone displays tolerance or amusement. His overtly perverted conduct serves as a source of comic relief but also generates skepticism among peers regarding his professionalism.

He first appears in the manga during the Mount Goryo training arc (chapter 23), where protagonists prepare to confront the Unclean Bunch. In the anime's second season, following Keisei's death, he assumes a more prominent role, providing tactical support and mentorship to the protagonists. His direct combat involvement increases significantly during conflicts against the Seven Stars antagonists.
