Description
Bachō Mōki, alias Sui, is the daughter of Batou, a military leader in Ryoushuu. She fought beside her father in the anti-Toutaku war. After Sousou's forces invaded Ryoushuu, Batou died and they lost their homeland. Orphaned and displaced, Bachō sought to join Kazuto's army to gain the strength needed for revenge against Sousou. Over time, she experienced significant emotional growth, gradually letting go of her vengeful desires and achieving peace, leading her to forgive Sousou.
Her personality is tomboyish, though not to extremes like Gien's. She typically presents as cool and laid-back but reacts with pronounced sensitivity to topics of love and femininity due to insecurity about her appeal as a woman. Teasing, especially of a perverse nature—often by Kazuto—causes intense flusteredness, stuttering, and physical aggression. Despite initial denials, she harbors deep romantic feelings for Kazuto. Bachō is straightforward and headstrong, acknowledging her own limitations in intellectual matters and preferring physical solutions. This simplicity is balanced by fierce loyalty to friends and dedication to her duties.
In combat, she is formidable, wielding the jumonji yari (cross-shaped spear) with proficiency, optimized for both slashing and stabbing. Trained from youth, she demonstrates exceptional strength, speed, reflexes, and stamina. She excels in cavalry leadership, a natural fit given her family's association with horses, and is recognized as the most skilled rider in her series. She owns three horses: Ouhou, Shien, and Kirin. In the anime, she can perceive an opponent's aura to gauge their strength and sincerity. However, she struggles with strategy, often acting impulsively without considering consequences, and exhibits stubbornness.
She maintains close relationships, forming a rapid and enduring friendship with Chouhi; they are frequently paired as a duo excelling in physical tasks, marked by mutual trust and camaraderie. Her interactions with Ryūbi include accidental physical mishaps, like falling onto her, leading to humorous misunderstandings—such as Kan'u questioning if Bachō had impregnated Ryūbi—though fleeting and comedic. Her most complex relationship is with Kazuto; his persistent teasing about her romantic insecurities provokes strong reactions, oscillating between denial and tsundere outbursts where she calls him "baka" while lashing out physically.
Notable points include her struggle with mild urinary incontinence, occasionally manifesting comically when prevented from using the bathroom, and being one of four characters renowned for large appetites. Her rigorous training regimen, attributed to her family's martial arts tradition, involves unconventional methods: bunnyhopping with weights, inverted sit-ups while suspended from trees, and resistance training in whirlpools. Design elements feature thicker eyebrows in later visual novel iterations, a signature headband worn during combat in the source material, and her weapon—initially planned as a naginata before being changed to a cross spear to avoid similarity to Kan'u's guandao.
