Description
Baron von Wolff began as a 12th-century Germanic crusader knight leading the Order of the Sacred Cross (Teutonic Knights). Excommunicated for practicing forbidden black magic, he led his order to invade Russia in 1242. They committed widespread atrocities before meeting their end at the Battle on the Ice. Dying, von Wolff prophesied his return in exactly 700 years to exact vengeance.

Centuries later in 1942, the Nazi SS occult branch Ahnenerbe, commanded by Obergruppenführer Linz, located von Wolff's burial site and retrieved his sword. Using the artifact in a ritual, they resurrected the baron's spirit to bolster the German war effort on the Eastern Front. Von Wolff accepted the Nazi alliance, though his personal vendetta against Russia remained his primary motive over any Third Reich ideology. His resurrection also granted him the power to summon an army of spectral Teutonic Knights from the afterlife.

Physically, von Wolff manifests as a spectral knight with brown hair and blue eyes, often clad in medieval armor. His personality is defined by ruthlessness, bloodlust, and an obsessive drive for revenge. He holds no loyalty beyond his own objectives, viewing the Nazi pact as purely transactional. His supernatural abilities include commanding legions of undead warriors and wielding arcane powers derived from his black magic mastery.

Within the film's narrative, von Wolff serves as the primary supernatural antagonist. He directs his ghostly army to aid Nazi forces during a crucial battle near Moscow, aiming to shift the strategic balance in Germany's favor. His plans are challenged by Nadya, a Soviet psychic who ventures into the afterlife to recruit her fallen comrades—the titular First Squad—to oppose von Wolff's forces. The conflict climaxes in a direct confrontation between von Wolff and Nadya, resulting in the baron's defeat and the dissolution of his spectral army. His storyline concludes definitively within this narrative.
