Description
Johannes Krauser II is the stage persona of Soichi Negishi, the protagonist of his story. Underneath this demonic facade is a twenty-three-year-old man from the rural town of Inukai in Oita Prefecture. Soichi is a gentle, introverted, and peace-loving individual whose personal tastes lean towards Swedish pop music and the cheerful melodies of artists like Kahimi Karie. He dreams of a career as a sophisticated pop singer, writing and performing sweet, romantic songs.
His reality, however, is a stark and frustrating contradiction. To make a living, Soichi is the lead singer and guitarist of the hugely popular death metal band Detroit Metal City, or DMC. On stage, he transforms into Johannes Krauser II, a sadistic demon from hell who is said to have committed grotesque acts like murdering his own parents. The character is defined by vulgar lyrics, a physically aggressive performance style, and a persona that revels in themes of violence, rape, and anarchy.
Soichi possesses a dual nature that is central to his existence. As himself, he is shy, insecure, and deeply ashamed of his work with DMC, going to great lengths to hide his identity from his gentle mother and his college crush, Yuri Aikawa, both of whom despise the band. However, this mild exterior conceals a well of repressed frustration, jealousy, and rage. When he is insulted, sees Aikawa with another man, or his beloved pop music is mocked, the Krauser personality can burst forth even offstage, leading to uncontrollable, destructive outbursts. His primary motivation is an ardent desire to escape the world of death metal and achieve success as a pop musician, yet he is paradoxically a virtuoso of the very genre he hates. He feels trapped by his contract, the expectations of his rabid fans, and his own surprising skill.
As Krauser II, Soichi exhibits remarkable and absurd abilities. He is an extraordinarily skilled guitarist, capable of playing complex riffs with the guitar behind his head or using only his teeth. His most infamous vocal feat is his ability to rapidly repeat the word rape, achieving a rate of over ten times per second in live performances. His stage shows often involve the ritualistic abuse of a middle-aged man known as the Capitalist Pig, whom Krauser humiliates and attacks as a form of entertainment.
Key relationships define his struggle. He is managed by the foul-mouthed and ruthless President of Death Records, a woman who creates bizarre promotional schemes and refuses to let him quit. His bandmates, the taciturn drummer Camus and the vain bassist Alexander Jagi, are dedicated to the metal scene and add to the pressure he feels. A significant rival is the legendary death metal emperor Jack ill Dark, whom Krauser II defeats in a memorable battle by a slim margin of two fucks. Following this defeat, Jack bestows upon him a legendary guitar, anointing him as his successor.
Throughout the story, Soichi experiences a conflicted development. While he never fully embraces his role, he gradually becomes more accustomed to the power and fame that Johannes Krauser II brings. The line between his mild-mannered self and his demonic stage persona begins to blur, with Krauser's aggressive confidence occasionally surfacing in his daily life. Despite his constant desire to quit, he repeatedly returns to the stage, driven by a mix of obligation, hidden rage, and the undeniable talent that makes him a legend in the world of death metal.
