Description
Rosa Ushiromiya, Kinzo Ushiromiya's youngest child and Maria Ushiromiya's mother, occupies the fourth position in the family hierarchy. This weak standing at family conferences results in little respect from her older siblings, exacerbated by the significant social stigma attached to her status as a single mother in 1980s Japan. She runs the financially struggling design company "Anti-Rosa," a situation worsened by her own lack of serious commitment. Her pursuit of Kinzo's inheritance is driven by the need to repay debts left by Maria's father, who abandoned her during pregnancy. Rosa clings to the unlikely hope that settling these debts might reunite their family.

Physically, Rosa possesses sandy brown hair styled in a hime cut; its length varies between adaptations, reaching past her shoulders in visual novels and down to her waist in manga. Her eyes are black in the original PC release and light brown in anime and console versions. Her typical attire includes a long black gown, dark red skirt, white shirt, and black boots with medium heels, featuring the Ushiromiya family crest on her tie. Childhood depictions show her with pigtails and a checkered skirt.

Rosa's volatile personality stems from deep-seated trauma. Abused physically and emotionally by parents and siblings during childhood, she harbors profound resentment and low self-esteem. Combined with the stresses of single parenthood and financial hardship, this leads to severe mood swings. She oscillates between affection towards Maria and explosive abuse, including physical violence, verbal degradation, and neglect—such as leaving Maria alone for days while secretly vacationing. Following these outbursts, she often expresses remorse, blaming her actions on "the Black Witch," a persona Maria internalizes to cope. Despite this, Rosa sees Maria as her sole ally and feels intense guilt over her maternal failures.

Beneath this instability, Rosa exhibits cunning and intelligence. She is one of only two family members (alongside Eva) to independently solve the epitaph riddle and employs manipulative tactics, like flirting with Battler to secure gold. In crises, she displays strategic paranoia, distrusting servants and isolating potential threats. Her public persona projects calm maturity, masking vulnerabilities like shame over Maria's behavioral issues and fear of societal judgment.

Her relationship with Maria is defined by contradiction. Rosa spoils her daughter with toys, reflecting her own childhood reliance on dolls for comfort, yet also inflicts abuse. This culminates in her destroying Maria's cherished stuffed animal, Sakutarou—an act symbolizing Rosa's internal conflict: resentment towards Maria as a reminder of her failed relationship and financial ruin, juxtaposed with a genuine desire for a better future. The manga depicts partial reconciliation in the afterlife (the Golden Land), where Rosa acknowledges perpetuating the cycle of abuse she endured.

In fantasy sequences, Rosa's unexpressed fury manifests as formidable combat abilities. She wields a sawed-off Winchester rifle and improvises weapons like gold ingots or pens to battle supernatural entities like Theory Goats in defense of Maria. This translates to the meta-world, where she embodies the "Black Witch," wielding conceptual weapons such as Purple Truth and exhibiting traits like abstract existence and reality warping. Her fighting game mechanics emphasize zoning and meter-dependent reversals, reflecting her resourcefulness.

Rosa's background includes a traumatic childhood encounter where she accidentally caused Beatrice II (Kinzo's illegitimate daughter) to fall from a cliff, compounding her guilt and fear of the occult. Her later life involves unsuccessful relationships and a fixation on public image, leading to social services investigations. In the series' real-world resolution (Rokkenjima Prime), she is killed by Kyrie during the family massacre.
