Description
Gwendal von Voltaire, eldest son of former Demon King Cecilie von Spitzweg and half-brother to Conrad Weller and Wolfram von Bielefeld, commands the Great Demon Kingdom's army. He oversees military strategy and frequently manages administrative duties, including paperwork for the current Demon King, Yuri Shibuya, especially during Yuri's absences. Though initially objecting to Yuri's youth and inexperience, Gwendal accepted the role due to the wishes of the kingdom's founder, Shinou.
Characterized by a stern, no-nonsense demeanor often marked by a furrowed brow, Gwendal harbors a secret fondness for cute animals and objects, like the dolphin keychain ("Bandou-kun") gifted by Yuri. His primary hobby is knitting stuffed animals, a childhood-originated stress reliever taught by his friend Anissina von Karbelnikoff. His creations are often misidentified—a knitted bear mistaken for a black pig, a cat resembling a raccoon. While he claims knitting sharpens concentration, he deeply fears Anissina due to her history of using him as a test subject for volatile inventions, causing visible anxiety like sweating or hiding.
His youth included deep disdain for humans, termed "Mazoku Pride" by Conrad's human father, Dunheely Weller. A pivotal moment occurred when Gwendal led an attack against bandits threatening a nameless village Dunheely was visiting. During their final duel, Gwendal recognized Dunheely's advanced age and diminished agility, contrasting earlier perceptions. After Dunheely died of old age, Gwendal buried him near a significant tree. Years later, during a family picnic, Gwendal admitted Dunheely remained significant precisely because he had hated him.
Gwendal's left eye serves as the key to the Forbidden Box "End of the Earth"; forcibly removing the key costs him vision in that eye. His ancestor, Siegbert Voltaire, fought alongside Shinou during the kingdom's founding.
Despite outwardly showing little affection, Gwendal demonstrates fierce loyalty to family. He defied the Original King to protect Wolfram, shielded Conrad from the burden of locating the Forbidden Boxes, and shows subtle care for Yuri, evident during a desert ordeal. He also cares for Yuri's adopted daughter, Greta, baking her animal-shaped cookies when her usual caretaker Günter is absent and tolerating her interruptions during work, stating, "Since it’s you, I don’t mind."
Gwendal has no interest in romantic relationships, considering love beyond his influence. His tactical acumen and earth-based magic are critical in battles, deploying reinforcements during crises and casting protective barriers. He bears the nicknames "Lord Gwendal 'Hardship Bearer' von Voltaire" and "Foster Father of Small Animals in Shin Makoku," the latter earned when he abandoned a meeting to rescue abandoned kittens in the rain. His role extends beyond military command; he maintains order during internal conflicts, such as preparing for civil war to thwart his uncle Stuffel's coup attempt until Yuri's intervention resolved the situation.
