Description
Adalbert von Grantz belongs to Shin Makoku's Ten Noble Families, signified by the "von" in his name. He was betrothed to Susanna Julia von Wincott, a famed healer and one of the kingdom's most potent magic users. Her death in the human-demon war scarred him, fueling his blame towards the Mazoku for her loss. He rejected demon society, viewing Mazoku as mere instruments of the Original King Shinou, and abandoned Shin Makoku to live among humans, though he harbored no particular fondness for humanity.
First encountered as an antagonist, he rescues Yuri Shibuya upon Yuri's arrival in the demon world, saving him from hostile villagers and awakening the demon language within Yuri's soul memory. Adalbert later attempts to convince Yuri to abandon the Mazoku, condemning their ways as corrupt. When persuasion fails, he turns to force, only to be stopped by Conrad Weller and subsequently Gwendal von Voltaire.
Deep grief and disillusionment drive him. He nurses intense resentment towards Conrad, partly rooted in Julia's father, Odel von Wincott, favoring Conrad—a half-human yet supremely skilled swordsman—as a politically advantageous match for Julia over Adalbert. This bred rumors of a potential engagement shift, though the narrative confirms Julia genuinely loved Adalbert, and her bond with Conrad was one of mutual respect, not romance. The war and political maneuvers, including Prime Minister Stoffel forcing Conrad's deployment, prevented resolution before Julia's death.
A pure-blooded Mazoku of significant magical ability, Adalbert uniquely mastered *houjutsu* (human magic), granting him rare versatility to wield both races' magic systems. This skill mirrors his complex position straddling the two worlds he often disdains.
His character evolves over time. Initially consumed by vengeance and a desire to destroy Shin Makoku, he gradually shifts towards protecting Yuri, Julia's reincarnation. He challenges Yuri to prove his worth as Demon King, revealing a conflicted, lingering tie to his homeland's future. His journey forces him to confront his unresolved grief over Julia, eventually finding a measure of peace by accepting Yuri's connection to Julia and her father's choices.
Following major conflicts, he settles in Seisakoku, signaling a move towards stability. He displays domestic skills like cooking and sewing, traits noted as husband material. He forms a family unit with Maxine and her children, Jason and Freddy, marking a departure from his solitary, vengeful existence towards a life defined by care and responsibility.
