OVA
Description
Zenigata Mawari is Nagasumi Michishio's childhood friend and the daughter of their hometown's police chief. Known as the "queen of cards" at Isumo Elementary School, she won two championships at the school card tournament with Nagasumi as her partner. She continues her competitive spirit in junior high as the leader of the Public Morals Committee, also called the Peacemakers, the dominant faction within Isono Junior High School's Discipline Committee. Her group frequently clashes with Sun and Lunar's personal bodyguards.
Mawari's personality centers on enforcing order and rules. She self-appoints herself to moderate behavior, often reprimanding Nagasumi for perceived infractions. Her trademark phrase, "Do you want Mawari to teach you the rules of society?", accompanies interventions against rule-breaking or concerning behavior, frequently underscored by police-whistle-like whistling. Driven to become a police chief like her father, she possesses keen investigative talent, including a near-uncanny ability to detect deception and persistent suspicion about Sun's true mermaid nature. Her interrogations involve methodical questioning and tactics like offering katsudon to elicit confessions. Despite initial friction due to Sun's fear of police figures, Mawari gradually forms a close friendship with her, though Sun's underlying anxiety occasionally resurfaces.
She exhibits an open, lively personality without social anxiety. Mawari commands significant popularity among Isono Junior High's female students due to her self-confident, charismatic, and somewhat boyish demeanor, surpassing any male student's popularity. While harboring romantic feelings for Nagasumi, she struggles to make him see her beyond a friend. Throughout the series and into the OVAs depicting their third year, she maintains her disciplinary activities and leadership position. Her investigations bring her close to uncovering Sun's mermaid secret multiple times, though she is usually diverted. An exception occurs when she temporarily confiscates a magic seashell, listens to it, and briefly transforms into a mermaid herself. Initially convinced it was a dream, she later deduces the truth but chooses to keep it secret.
Physically, Mawari stands at 148 cm with a petite build. She has dark brown, medium-length hair styled with three distinct bangs and purple eyes. Her standard attire is her school uniform with a band on her left arm identifying her as a member of the "Discipline committee." Her name references both the fictional Edo-period policeman Zenigata Heiji and the polite Japanese term for a patrol officer, "Omawari-san," though she dislikes being addressed with the latter term.
