Description
Jirou Tomitake, a freelance photographer, visits Hinamizawa under the pretense of capturing wild birds—a cover masking his role as an auditor for a clandestine organization overseeing the Hinamizawa Syndrome research project. His alias conceals a military past as a JSDF First Lieutenant and sniper instructor, alongside counterintelligence expertise. Though outwardly amiable with villagers like Mion and Rena, he collaborates with researchers Kyousuke Irie and Miyo Takano, navigating a tangled blend of professional coordination and unresolved romantic tension.

Tomitake’s fate across timelines follows a grim pattern: after each Watanagashi Festival, Takano’s injections induce Level 5 Hinamizawa Syndrome, driving him to fatal self-inflicted throat injuries—a calculated element of her Great Hinamizawa Disaster plot. In rare arcs like Matsuribayashi-hen, his survival allows his military skills—marksmanship, strategic acumen—to shine as he aids Rika Furude’s coalition, coordinating counterintelligence efforts to dismantle Takano’s schemes.

His dynamic with Takano balances reluctant loyalty against moral defiance. Despite affection, he rejects her manipulations, refusing to enable her ambitions. Post-arrest, he remains her steadfast ally, hinting at eventual reconciliation and a return to Hinamizawa. Colleagues like Irie nickname him “Risa,” playfully mocking his military background while underscoring their camaraderie.

Anime-exclusive arcs expand his influence: leveraging sniper-honed precision in photography and tactical operations, he disrupts Takano’s plans, shielding her as a witness during investigations. His calm exterior belies social awkwardness, particularly around women—a flaw Takano teasingly highlights.

Functioning as both observer and participant, Tomitake bridges Hinamizawa’s idyllic surface and its covert conflicts. His interventions against Takano’s machinations and their lingering emotional ties paint him as a tragic pivot in the village’s cycle of secrecy and catastrophe.
