Description
Kouichi Minamoto supervises and commands The Children, a special esper team featuring three exceptionally powerful young espers: Kaoru Akashi, Shiho Sannomiya, and Aoi Nogami. Despite having no esper abilities himself, Minamoto leverages outstanding intellect, exceptional memory, keen observation, and rapid problem-solving to devise mission strategies. His childhood isolation stemmed from prodigious intelligence that disrupted peers' studies, leading to enrollment in a special Comerica program—an experience mirroring The Children's neglect and fostering his empathy. At university, he forged a lasting friendship with esper Shūji Sakaki, later joining B.A.B.E.L. together.

Initially assigned as a 20-year-old B.A.B.E.L. researcher to oversee The Children's missions and daily welfare, Minamoto earned their high regard despite frequent disobedience and pranks. They arranged to live with him shortly after his assignment, rejecting their biological families. His approach treats them as children rather than tools, enabling their positive development—a departure from predecessors.

Minamoto exhibits a generally kind, responsible, and tolerant demeanor, though extreme provocation triggers intense anger, manifesting as a comically fearsome persona that unsettles even superiors and The Children. He excels at domestic tasks, particularly cooking, surpassing even his mother's skill.

A central conflict involves his struggle to avert a prophecy—revealed by esper dolphin I-009 (Igou)—where he kills Kaoru in an esper-led war. This drives Minamoto's commitment to altering their fates. He suppresses emerging romantic feelings for Kaoru due to his guardian role and the prophecy. His turmoil intensifies when encountering Feather, a manifestation of Kaoru's future consciousness, who confirms the confrontation's inevitability but vows to change it.

After a timeskip, Minamoto's responsibilities expand to supervising additional support teams: "The Shadows of the Children," "The Explorer," and "The Sleeping Snow White." His relationships extend beyond The Children, including ally Sakaki and adversary Kyōsuke Hyōbu of P.A.N.D.R.A., who occasionally tests his resolve. A past romantic relationship with Caroline Magi’s alter ego, Carrie, during his Comerica years foreshadowed his conflict with Kaoru; Carrie's childlike attachment ended when she relinquished control of Caroline’s body.

Minamoto’s namesake derives from Hikaru Genji of *The Tale of Genji*, who received the surname "Minamoto" after losing royal status. His given name, Kōichi, combines the characters for "light" (光) and "one" (一).
