Description
Genzo Sanzo Hoshi, commonly known as Sanzo Hoshi or Sanzo, is a monk traveling through ancient China in AD 636. He wears distinct white and yellow robes and a hat with long drooping sides that hides his bald head and elongated earlobes. A defining feature is his necklace of purple beads; the central bead, called the Purple Plum of Tranquility, resembles a Cosmos Stone but serves only as ornamentation.
Sanzo Hoshi passionately advocates for universal harmony and opposes violence. He frequently attempts to intervene in conflicts between the D-Team and the Spectral Space Pirates. Despite his strong convictions, he displays significant cowardice, often reacting with terror to danger, though he periodically resolves to continue his efforts. His commitment drives him to physically dive between battling dinosaurs, though these actions rarely succeed.
Tasked with chanting to open a mountain sealed by a mystical barrier during his travels with the D-Team, he leverages his reputation as a "championship chanter." His disciples, sworn to protect him, abandon him during an encounter with Foolscap's Shantungosaurus, leaving him vulnerable until the D-Team rescues him. He later forms a bond with this Shantungosaurus, recognizing its gentle nature and pleading with the D-Team to avoid conflict with it.
Locals frequently mistake him for a revered figure, leading the Alpha Gang to impersonate him and exploit his fame, causing comedic confusion. His patient and balanced outlook inadvertently influences Max, who adopts this perspective after seeing Sanzo Hoshi's unwavering belief in peaceful resolutions. On one occasion, Sanzo Hoshi's chanting coincides with seismic tremors caused by Tank the Ankylosaurus, dislodging a giant rock; he interprets this as proof of his chant's power, while others remain doubtful.
Sanzo Hoshi's journey mirrors the tale of "Journey to the West," with the D-Team members paralleling its heroes: Max as the Monkey King, Rex as Sandy, and Zoe as Pigsy – a connection Rex and Max explicitly note. His story concludes with him safely returning home, where he recounts his adventures with the D-Team as a journey to the west, subtly planting the seed for the literary classic.
His background includes a brief meeting with Dr. Z of the Alpha Gang; Dr. Z becomes trapped between rocks and is accidentally freed during Sanzo Hoshi's chanting. Sanzo Hoshi later negotiates with the Space Pirates, agreeing to chant open a cave in exchange for the release of the D-Team's parents, though the Pirates betray the agreement. Following these events, he parts from the D-Team to journey home alone, wishing them harmony and balance.
