Description
Kaoru Shimizu is introduced as a classmate of the protagonist in elementary school. She initially has no interest in baseball, finding it boring, but her life changes course after an argument with a passionate and headstrong boy who is trying to form a local little league team. Despite her lack of skill and knowledge, she is the first person recruited to join the Mifune Dolphins, starting her journey in the sport. She later switches to softball in junior high school, becoming the captain of her team, and continues to play at Seishu High School and Kyowa University.
Kaoru has a strong-willed and competitive personality, which can sometimes manifest as a short temper, but this is balanced by a caring and warm nature. She is described as somewhat boyish in her demeanor, yet she also possesses a pure and sincere heart, especially when it comes to her feelings. While she is generally cheerful and supportive, she is not afraid to speak her mind or show frustration, particularly when dealing with the often single-minded and reckless baseball prodigy who becomes the focus of her life.
Her primary motivation is closely tied to her love for baseball and softball, though her passion for the sport is initially kindled by another person. As she grows, her drive becomes more personal, striving to improve her own abilities and follow her own path in the sport she has come to love. This desire to remain true to herself is a major force in her decisions, such as when she chooses a high school with a softball program over simply following a boy to a prestigious baseball academy. Ultimately, her actions and choices are also deeply influenced by her long-standing romantic feelings, leading her to eventually build a family and a life with that person.
Kaoru serves as a constant presence throughout the story, evolving from a novice teammate into a crucial player and later a supportive partner. In the early Little League arc, she grows from the weakest player, placed in the least demanding fielding position, into a reliable asset. She demonstrates remarkable courage by volunteering to be the catcher, an incredibly difficult position, after the original catcher is injured, successfully catching powerful pitches in a short amount of time. As the story progresses into high school and adulthood, her role shifts more towards that of a manager and a source of emotional support, cheering from the stands and providing encouragement during critical moments and personal slumps.
Kaoru’s most significant relationship is with the series' main character, whom she eventually marries and has two children with, a daughter named Izumi and a son named Daigo. Their bond begins with bickering and mutual frustration in childhood, but it deepens through shared experiences on the baseball field, eventually evolving into a romantic relationship after high school. Her family also includes her younger brother, Taiga. Other important relationships include her teammates, with whom she shares the struggles and triumphs of competition. She also interacts with rivals and friends of her future husband, at times offering them her own brand of quiet support and understanding.
Her personal development is a long and steady arc, mirroring the protagonist's journey from childhood to adulthood. She starts as a girl who knows nothing about baseball and joins the team on a challenge. She experiences jealousy, heartbreak, and the pain of separation when her friend and crush moves away. However, she matures into a dedicated athlete in her own right, a captain of her softball team, and eventually a wife and mother. She navigates the challenges of a long-distance relationship and makes difficult decisions about her own future, such as choosing her high school and later giving up a chance to go to America to rediscover her passion for softball. Her journey shows a girl finding her own identity and strength, both within and outside of her relationship.
In terms of notable abilities, Kaoru is shown to be a versatile and athletically gifted player. While playing baseball, she primarily served as a right fielder and later as a catcher, successfully handling difficult pitches. After switching to softball, she became a skilled pitcher and second baseman. Her athleticism is evident from a young age, but her defining trait is not raw talent but her courage and determination, exemplified by her willingness to take on the challenging role of catcher with minimal experience. In her adult years, she is still shown to be active, even helping her son practice his catching skills by pitching to him.
