Description
Chess is a fictional character from the anime One Piece: Into the Grand Line and a minor antagonist. He is a tall man with unusually long arms and wavy, thick lips, standing at 194 centimeters. His name is derived from the game of chess, and his birthday is July 20. He was originally 32 years old during his first appearance.
Background
Chess served as the参谋 (staff officer) or minister of defense for the Drum Kingdom under the tyrannical King Wapol. In this official capacity, he held considerable authority over the citizens and was responsible for recording all of the king's new laws as well as everything Wapol personally consumed. When the pirate Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard, attacked Drum Island, Chess did not defend the kingdom. Instead, he chose to flee to sea alongside his king and fellow minister, Kuromarimo. During the nearly year-long exile that followed, Chess became a member of the Bliking Pirates under Wapol before eventually returning to reclaim their former territory.
Personality
Chess is portrayed as being deeply loyal to King Wapol, adhering to the king's philosophy that a ruler's desires are the most important guide for governance. He supported Wapol's oppressive policies, including the elimination of most of the island's doctors, and argued that such tyranny was a necessary measure to protect the people. This belief stems from his view that politics and morality are separate matters, and he famously stated that "one doesn't need a heart for politics." He has no sympathy for those he considers traitors, such as the royal guard Dalton who opposed the king's cruelty. In addition to his loyalty, Chess is known to be quite cocky and self-assured, frequently claiming to have identified his opponent's weaknesses. He does not hesitate to harm innocent bystanders to achieve his goals.
Motivations
Chess's primary motivation is to serve and preserve the reign of Wapol. He remains an advocate for Wapol's authoritarian rule until the very end and shows no desire for personal political power, even when opportunities to abandon his weak and unpopular king present themselves.
Role in the Story
Chess acts as a significant supporting antagonist during the Drum Island Arc. He accompanies King Wapol back to the island, where they encounter the Straw Hat Pirates. He participates in the conflict against the pirates and the island's resistance fighters, directly attacking Dalton and later fleeing from Monkey D. Luffy. Eventually, he is swallowed by Wapol using the powers of the Baku Baku no Mi (Munch-Munch Fruit) to become a fused being used as a weapon against Tony Tony Chopper.
Key Relationships
Chess is almost always seen with his partner, Kuromarimo. While Chess's primary method of combat is archery, the two function as a duo and coordinate their attacks. The most notable expression of their relationship is their ability to fuse together through Wapol's Devil Fruit ability. Outside of this partnership, his entire identity and loyalty are focused solely on serving King Wapol, whose every decree he supports and documents.
Development
Chess remains a static character without significant development or redemption. He begins and ends his role in the story as a loyal subordinate to Wapol, never questioning the morality of the actions he carries out. After his defeat and separation from Wapol, his future activities are not detailed.
Notable Abilities
Chess is a highly skilled archer and a self-proclaimed sharpshooter, capable of nocking and firing three arrows simultaneously with precision. He is often seen using flaming arrows in combat. When fighting alongside Kuromarimo, he employs a combination strategy: Kuromarimo throws his highly flammable, static-charged afro hair wigs to attach to opponents, and Chess then ignites them with his flaming arrows for increased damage. However, Chess's greatest combat ability is accessed only through Wapol's power. When Wapol uses his Munch-Munch Fruit to swallow both Chess and Kuromarimo, they are merged into a single, much larger, and more powerful warrior known as Chessmarimo (or Chessimo in some sources). In this fused form, the being has four arms and wields heavy weaponry like large hammers and axes, allowing for powerful techniques. Despite being referred to by his creators as the strongest warrior of Drum Kingdom, this fused form is ultimately defeated by Chopper.
