Description
Youko Hazama is the lead engineer at Alvis, tasked with maintaining Fafners, conducting system tests, and analyzing pilot data. She prepares Fafner units for deployment, transfers battle data to improve systems, and oversees technical operations in combat. Directly supporting pilots like Kazuki Makabe during initial sorties involves managing synergetic suit protocols and sterilizing procedures, while also providing battle system updates to command.

As an adoptive mother, she raises Shouko Hazama with profound devotion, treating her as her true daughter and sometimes forgetting their lack of biological relation. This bond ends tragically when Shouko sacrifices herself piloting Mark Sechs. Years later, Youko houses Canon Memphis, developing a mentor-student relationship while supervising Canon's mechanical work on units like Mark Sechs Kai. She blends professional guidance with personal care, inviting Canon for meals and monitoring her wellbeing.

During Exodus, she engineers third-generation Fafners, integrating pilot customization requests while solving core compatibility issues. She confronts the ethical burden of Fafner development, acknowledging to Canon that machines like Mark Sein inevitably harm their pilots. Her technical skill extends to strategic defense coordination during Festum attacks on Human Army carriers.

Staffing shortages in The Beyond require her to assist in the Command Center during combat. There, she advocates for tactical changes, like restraining Mark Nicht instead of sinking it. Her emotional resilience is tested by Festum-human hybrid pilots like Misao Kurusu. When he predicts his death, she furiously rejects his assertion she is "used to death," declaring nobody adapts to loss and demanding he fight enemies elsewhere. This sparks a tearful breakdown, though she later reconciles with Misao, hugging him upon his return. She also processes grief through Maya Toomi, who conveys Misao's wish not to be forgotten.

Participating in the Second Plan L and Sixth Operation Azure aboard the L-Boat, she witnesses Misao's death at the hands of Chaos Bartland. After the mission's success, she returns to Tatsumiyajima after five years away, visiting the Hazama family grave to announce her homecoming. She then pays respects at Misao's resting place, tearfully thanking him for his sacrifices while anticipating meeting his reincarnated self. During the Tanabata Festival, she observes lantern ceremonies before resuming engineering duties, overseeing Kazuki and Kouyou Kasugai's departure.
