Gunjō, a blue ogre living on Monster Island, sustains a friendship with the solitary and grumpy red ogre, Naki. As Naki's sole friend, Gunjō consistently offers patient counsel, encouraging understanding and tolerance. After the human child Kotake arrives, Naki forms an unexpected bond while caring for him. Gunjō remains a supportive presence, observing Naki's gradual emotional opening through interactions with Kotake. When Kotake expresses a desire to return to his human parents, Naki attempts to escort him back but the villagers attack Naki and take Kotake away. Following this separation, Naki falls into profound depression. Witnessing his friend's suffering, Gunjō decides to intervene. His actions directly confront Naki's despair but result in permanent separation between Gunjō and Naki.
