Description
Natsuru Senō is an ordinary second-year student at Seitetsu Gakuin, initially defined by an unremarkable life and a long-standing, unrequited crush on school beauty Kaede Sakura. This routine shatters when he awakens transformed into a female, accompanied by the sentient stuffed tiger Harakiri Tora, who reveals Natsuru's selection as a "Kämpfer"—a female combatant destined for factional battles. A blue Bracelet of Oath materializes on his wrist, triggering involuntary gender transformation during combat or emotional distress, as all Kämpfers must be female.

His female Kämpfer form possesses distinct traits: long blue hair in a ponytail, a taller and more developed physique, earning classification among the school's "Three Beauties" alongside Shizuku Sangō and Kaede Sakura. This form wields fire-based magical abilities called "Zauber," primarily manifesting as fireball projectiles, alongside enhanced agility and superhuman fighting capabilities. Emotional instability or combat triggers shifts between identities, creating intense psychological strain. Natsuru struggles with gender norms, often forgetting feminine speech patterns and experiencing acute embarrassment regarding the female body, avoiding situations like communal baths.

Exposure of the female identity necessitates dual enrollment—attending classes as both male and female under the same name—orchestrated by student council president Shizuku Sangō to mask Kämpfer activities. This double life involves constant deception, near-exposure incidents, and managing unwanted romantic attention directed at both identities. Kaede Sakura develops a strong infatuation with the female Natsuru, creating a rivalry with the male identity for her affection. Simultaneously, Natsuru's male form attracts romantic interest from fellow Kämpfers Akane Mishima (Blue faction), Shizuku Sangō (Red faction), and childhood friend Mikoto Kondō (Red faction), creating an unwanted harem scenario complicated by Natsuru's persistent, single-minded devotion to Kaede—later revealed to be partially influenced by her subconscious brainwashing as the Moderator.

Development involves gradual adaptation to the dual existence. Initial confusion and lack of control over transformations or combat abilities evolve into conscious management of gender shifts and strategic use of fire magic. Personality traits include inherent kindness, pacifism, naivete, and nervousness, particularly in female form. Perceptions vary: some depict obliviousness to romantic advances; others suggest strategic ignorance to avoid choosing among jealous suitors. Critical plot points include repeated victimization via mind control by Kaede (the secret Moderator), forcing Natsuru into situations like attempted assaults on allies. A sea slug trinket gifted to Shizuku breaks one brainwashing episode. Discovering Kaede's role as the Moderator and her manipulation creates internal conflict, yet his attraction to her persists despite her antagonism.

Later narratives explore extreme scenarios, including an OVA where Natsuru's male and female counterparts marry and produce a child through unexplained means, symbolizing forced self-acceptance of the dual identity. Throughout conflicts, Natsuru prioritizes protecting friends and uncovering the purpose behind the Kämpfer battles, relying on allies like Akane and Shizuku despite factional differences. The core struggle revolves around reconciling the male identity's ordinary desires with the female identity's responsibilities and unwanted prominence, while navigating manipulated emotions and fragmented relationships stemming from the ongoing war.
