Description
Karura Itami emerges from Youji Haneda when overwhelming negative emotions consume the host consciousness. He identifies as Garuda Darkblack, the self-proclaimed true ruler of the fantasy realm Gretagard. This delusion fuels his drive to recruit followers and pursue conquest, reflecting his violent, impulsive nature where force is his primary solution.
His perception of reality is fundamentally disconnected; he interprets mundane objects or situations through his imagined kingdom, attacking a snowman perceived as a hostile entity. He displays extreme confidence and bluntness, oblivious to social norms, which others see as a lack of social skills or comical seriousness. Despite his aggressive demeanor, he shows unwavering loyalty and gentleness towards Kobato Haneda, Youji's younger sister, for whom he would sacrifice himself.
Karura's existence stems directly from Youji's childhood trauma. Gretagard, central to his identity, originates from "Wing Quest," a video game Youji played in youth, making Karura a manifestation of escapism from psychological pain. He remains suppressed within Youji's subconscious unless provoked by emotional turmoil. When unleashed, he resists relinquishing control, requiring voluntary withdrawal to allow other personalities (Takashi, Shūsuke, Hayato) to surface.
His relationship with Kakeru Ohtori, who also has dissociative identity disorder, is significant; Kakeru serves him with fervent loyalty, calling him "Falcon" and aiding his attempts to build a real-world faction. Karura's chaotic actions—like declaring war over trivial incidents—heighten tensions within the narrative, intersecting with other characters' lives. His presence culminates in confrontations forcing the personalities to acknowledge their shared existence, especially during Youji's climactic psychological struggles.
Thematically, Karura embodies the fragmentation of Youji's psyche, representing raw, id-like impulses and the consequences of unprocessed trauma. His abrupt appearances and absurdist behavior contrast with the series' darker themes, contributing to the protagonists' fractured realities.
