Description
Melty Q Melromarc is the second princess of the kingdom of Melromarc and holds the position of heir to the throne, having been chosen as the successor over her older sister, Malty. She has the appearance of a young girl, with blue eyes and blue hair that is typically tied into two curly pigtails with blue ribbons. Her attire consists of fancy, frilly clothes that are predominantly blue with white accents, befitting her royal status.
In her first encounters, Melty presents herself as polite and proper, which is a persona she adopts to maintain appearances. Beneath this exterior, she possesses a genuine kindness and lacks the prejudice towards commoners and demi-humans that is common among Melromarc's nobility. She demonstrates a level of maturity and moral fortitude that is notable for her age, making her the complete opposite of her sister, Malty. Despite her composure, she can still exhibit behavior typical of a child her age, a side of her that emerges more as she spends time with Naofumi and his party, which sometimes confuses Melty herself. She has a great interest in Filolials, a hobby inherited from her mother, which initially draws her to Naofumi's companion, Filo, who becomes her best friend.
Melty's primary motivation is to fulfill her duties as a princess responsibly, driven by a strong sense of justice and a desire to improve her kingdom. Unlike her sister, she does not abuse her status and aims to rule fairly. A pivotal experience that shapes her resolve occurs when she witnesses firsthand the horrific treatment of demi-human slaves by a corrupt noble within her own country. This event shocks her and solidifies her commitment to creating a peaceful land where humans and demi-humans can coexist.
Her role in the story begins when she is sent back to the royal capital by her mother, Queen Mirellia, with the task of mending the relationship between her father, King Aultcray, and the Shield Hero, Naofumi Iwatani. During her journey, she becomes lost but is escorted to safety by Naofumi, unaware of his identity, and quickly befriends his filolial, Filo. She soon becomes the target of an assassination plot by the Church of the Three Heroes and her sister Malty, forcing her to come under Naofumi's protection. While initially strained by Naofumi's hostility towards her family, their relationship gradually develops into a deep bond of trust and friendship as he protects her from numerous dangers. She later defends Naofumi against false accusations and plays a key role in his party's journey to clear his name. After the death of her mother and the subsequent war against Faubrey, Melty ascends to the throne and becomes the Queen of Melromarc. In a moment of spite following her coronation, she promotes Naofumi to the rank of Archduke, unknowingly and technically engaging herself to him, as the position is traditionally second only to the monarch.
Key relationships define much of her development. Her relationship with Naofumi evolves from neutral, to alienated by his dark demeanor, and finally to a strong mutual respect and trust. She later becomes one of the people closest to him, often managing his territory on his behalf. She shares a close friendship with Raphtalia, who was more lenient towards her than Naofumi initially, and the two become trusted comrades. Her bond with Filo is particularly strong; she considers the Filolial her best friend and cried when they were first separated. Naofumi's own trust in Melty is heavily based on Filo's good judgment of character. In contrast, her relationship with the Spear Hero, Motoyasu, is difficult, as he refuses to listen to her and believes she has been brainwashed by Naofumi. The situation is further complicated when Naofumi jokingly tells Motoyasu that Melty is Filo's fiancé, causing Motoyasu to view her as a love rival.
Over the course of the narrative, Melty demonstrates significant personal growth. She starts as a sheltered princess trying to mediate a political dispute but matures into a capable leader and ruler. After seeing the brutal reality of demi-human slavery in her kingdom, she evolves from having a theoretical understanding of social strain to a leader with a concrete resolve for reform. Following her mother's death, she grieves but manages to maintain her composure and quickly restores her resolve to lead her kingdom in battle. As queen, she shows a deep sense of responsibility despite having no personal desire for power, and she often visits Naofumi's village under the pretense of inspections to relax from her heavy workload.
In terms of abilities, Melty is a talented mage who specializes in Water-type magic, though she is also noted to be a user of Earth-type magic, albeit less competently. Her known water magic spells include Zweite Aqua Shot, which fires a ball of water, and its variation All Zweite Aqua Shot, which fires multiple smaller balls. She can use Zweite Aqua Slash and Drifa Aqua Slash, which shape water into a sharp blade to cut a target. She also knows defensive and utility spells such as Zweite Squall, which summons a heavy rainstorm, and First Aqua Heal, a minor healing spell. Melty is also capable of performing Cooperative Magic with her allies; notable examples include Typhoon, a combination spell cast with Filo that creates a powerful tornado filled with rain and hail, and Saint Rain, cast with Wyndia, which summons a rainstorm infused with holy magic to counter curses. Beyond magic, Melty possesses diplomatic skills and can play musical instruments fairly well, often providing music for Filo's public concerts.
