Description
Moro is one of two artificial beings, alongside Maru, who reside within Yuko Ichihara’s wish-granting shop. Her full name is Morodashi, a term that means “completely exposed,” reflecting a playful naming theme shared with her counterpart. She is a small girl with short pink hair and is often seen dressed in identical clothing to Maru. The exact origins of Moro and Maru are ambiguous; it is not clearly stated whether they were created by Yuko, the sorcerer Clow Reed, or both, but they are described as soulless entities that cannot exist outside the shop. Their presence is essential to the shop’s existence, as their concentration keeps the shop visible only to those fated to find it.
Moro’s personality is lively and mischievous. She and Maru almost always speak in unison, repeating each other or finishing each other’s sentences. They are energetic and cheerful, often teasing Watanuki and dragging him into Yuko’s schemes. Despite their playful antics, they show genuine concern for Yuko and later for Watanuki, demonstrating awareness of serious situations. For example, when Watanuki fell ill after an encounter with a spirit, Moro and Maru sensed something was wrong and dragged him as far as the shop’s gate, where they could not go further, before handing him over to Domeki.
Moro’s primary motivation is to serve Yuko and maintain the shop’s function. Because she has no soul, she cannot physically leave the shop premises; attempting to do so would cause her body to disintegrate. This limitation is also linked to her role in anchoring the shop’s reality. Her deep attachment to Yuko and later to Watanuki drives her actions, and she takes part in assisting customers and cheering on the shop’s activities.
In the story, Moro serves as a supporting character who provides comic relief but also underscores the supernatural rules that govern the shop. She interacts frequently with Maru as a duo, and their bond is close, functioning almost like fraternal twins. With Watanuki, their relationship evolves from mild annoyance to genuine fondness; Watanuki shows slight affection for them, and they reciprocate. After Yuko’s eventual death, Moro and Maro briefly disappear, but Yuko uses the last of her power to bring them back. Following this, their loyalty transfers to Watanuki, and they continue to assist him in managing the shop.
Notable abilities include the power to sustain the shop’s physical manifestation through their collective concentration, a task that causes them to experience long periods of deep sleep as a side effect. They also possess an intuitive sensitivity to supernatural disturbances, as demonstrated when they detected Watanuki’s condition without being told. However, they lack souls and are bound to the shop, which limits their physical agency. Over the course of the series, Moro remains a constant presence, representing the continuity of the shop and the bonds formed within it, even through significant changes such as Yuko’s departure and Watanuki’s eventual succession as the shop’s keeper.
