Accidentally swallowing a fork caused Schneider stomach pain and bloody coughs. Mistaking this for terminal illness, he devised a plan to distance Buzz, assigning him the impossible task of stealing Monkey D. Luffy’s straw hat to spare Buzz from witnessing his death.

The Straw Hat Pirates found Schneider unconscious on his ship. Brought aboard the Thousand Sunny, Tony Tony Chopper treated him without identifying the cause. Schneider awoke to learn Buzz succeeded in stealing the hat but was now pursued by Luffy, facing dangers like Marines and Sea Kings.
