TV-Series
Description
Flamberge, once Francesca, holds the title of Silver Biblioprincess and serves as custodian of the Long Lost Library. She exists within her own body as a living vessel for Phantom Books, magical tomes containing forbidden knowledge. Her past includes residing in a clock tower as a friend to a woman significant to Hal Kamhout. After the tower collapsed during winter, she experienced memory loss and transformed into the unstable vessel of the library, with Hal becoming her key-keeper and a Book Burning Officer.

Physically, Flamberge resembles a teenage girl with long silver hair tied in a ponytail, snow-white skin, and violet eyes in the anime adaptation (magenta elsewhere). She wears a thick white straitjacket secured by black leather straps and multiple locks, restraining her body while leaving her head and hands free. Access to the library within her is through a silver zipper sewn into her skin from left breast to right thigh in the novels, or an abdominal opening in the anime. She often wears aviator-style goggles when traveling with Hal.

Flamberge displays a mentally unstable personality, prone to sudden bursts of mad laughter, especially when fragmented memories surface. She is mischievous, blunt, and frequently provokes others, particularly Hal, accusing him of perverse tendencies like fetishizing straitjackets or preferring women's clothing. Despite her abrasive demeanor, she shows care for Hal, empathizing with his tragic past, and kindness towards children, such as reading fairy tales to Patricia Nash.

Her narrative centers on assisting Hal in locating and destroying Phantom Books. Key events include the Libricide arc, where they investigate a town controlled by sentient dolls created via a Phantom Book. Flamberge bonds with Patricia, the sister of the book's user, and witnesses Hal destroying the book and its effects. In the Book of Atonement storyline, she aids Hal in confronting zombie outbreaks linked to forbidden knowledge, demonstrating her role in identifying supernatural threats. She is also present in the OVA *The Briar Princess*.

Her relationship with Hal is contentious, marked by mutual insults—he calls her "trash" or an "insane doll," while she mocks his demeanor and alleged fetishes. Despite this friction, they share a profound, unspoken loyalty rooted in their shared history and trauma. Accessing the library requires Hal to use enchanted keys to unlock her straitjacket while reciting the ritual phrase "Art thou mankind?" to which she responds, "No. I am heaven… the fallen heaven." Extracting Phantom Books causes her visible pain, underscoring the physical toll of her role.
