Description
"Chaser" John Doe is a dream demon from the Dream World. Initially pursuing Yumeji Fujiwara as an antagonist, he seeks to use Yumeji's body as a vessel for entering the human world. He deploys an army of cats, the Little Chasers, into Yumeji's dreams to weaken his mind.
He wears a distinctive white skull-like mask, a red hooded cape, a black suit, white gloves, and boots. In the human world, he inhabits a black cat adorned with a cape-like accessory. His personality is enigmatic, calm, and deeply knowledgeable about dream demon incursions into reality. He self-identifies as "an ally of the truth," prioritizing the pursuit of knowledge over indiscriminate hostility.
His initial plan to possess Yumeji fails when Merry Nightmare defeats him within Yumeji's dream. Despite this setback, he gains insights and shifts to monitoring events. Later, when Engi Threepiece severely wounds Yumeji, John Doe heals him within his own daydream realm, resembling a small city. He reveals that dream demons are drawn to the human world by a powerful light emitted by Pharos Hercules.
John Doe becomes an occasional ally, providing guidance that enables Yumeji to develop his "Lucid Gadget" ability to replicate dream demon powers. He assists Yumeji against threats like Noir and Landsborough, maintaining an aloof demeanor, though his Little Chasers often reveal his genuine intent to help.
Eventually, he secures a permanent vessel as a black cat, citing its superior agility and reflexes. Yumeji names the cat "John," and it resides at the Tachibana household. In this form, he retains his abilities and supports Yumeji more directly. He participates in confrontations against Hercules and becomes the first dream demon to perform a "Vessel Transfer" with Yumeji. This fusion enables the "Ultra Lucid Gadget" technique, temporarily transforming Yumeji's appearance and granting him John Doe's signature saw-guillotine sword and super-speed capabilities.
His motivations center on uncovering truths, particularly regarding Hercules's activities and the disruption between the Dream and human worlds. He commands the Little Chasers even in the human world, though their range is limited to 10 kilometers from his location. After adopting his cat vessel, he exhibits feline traits like an affinity for feather toys while retaining his strategic and observant nature.
