Description
Merry Nightmare, a dream demon and gatekeeper of the dream world, maintains the boundary between dreams and reality. She possesses purple hair and green eyes with horizontal rectangular pupils that shift between black and white. A scar marks her right arm, typically concealed by a wrist cloth. Her signature attire includes a white hat bearing a closed-eye insignia, a white overcoat with curled coattails, a midriff-baring camisole featuring a "Z"-like design, a short skirt, black-and-white stockings, and shoes displaying the same insignia. Sheep motifs throughout her design reference the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb."
Energetically determined yet emotionally vulnerable, Merry struggles with her inability to return home. Initially dismissive of human connections, she gradually forms deep bonds, displaying fierce loyalty and protectiveness, particularly toward Yumeji Fujiwara. Her tactical bluntness often causes social misunderstandings. She adores doughnuts, avoids carbonated and spicy foods, and enjoys video games. Her catchphrase, "There really are no hopes or dreams," reflects an initial pessimism that evolves through her experiences.
Ten years before the main events, an incident at the dream world's gate displaced Merry into the human world with amnesia. During this event, a young Yumeji Fujiwara—accidentally transported to the dream world—disrupted a key organization system, prompting an investigation into a misplaced key. This led to a collision with another dream demon, Rem, causing their right arms to swap and propelling both Merry and Yumeji through a vortex into the human world. The incident scarred their arms and erased their memories of each other. Merry spent the subsequent decade wandering the human world, battling other dream demons while searching for a way home, occasionally fainting from exhaustion.
Her gatekeeper abilities allow her to interact with and banish dream demons using a keychain that summons the gate between worlds. In combat, she primarily employs hand-to-hand techniques ("She-Fu") but can manifest chains or shackles to immobilize foes. When enraged—especially if Yumeji is endangered—her eyes turn red, unleashing enhanced power capable of shattering dream spaces. She creates and controls "The Garden," a pocket dimension containing stellar bodies and its own physical laws, which she can destroy or reconstruct. Within this realm, she exhibits multi-solar system-level durability and stellar-range influence. Her immortality is tied to the gate's existence; without it, she would fade. She resists soul, empathic, spatial, and reality-warping manipulations.
Merry's development centers on relationships. After literally falling onto Yumeji, she reluctantly accepts his help, forming a partnership where he locates dream demons using his aura vision while she battles them. She resides with Yumeji and his childhood friend Isana Tachibana, working at their family restaurant. Through interactions with them and others like doll-collector Yui Kounagi, she transitions from isolation to valuing companionship. Recurring pain in her scar and fragmented memories culminate in her recovering the past: her role as gatekeeper, the arm-swap incident with Yumeji, and their shared history. This revelation deepens her commitment to protecting both worlds.
Her story concludes during a confrontation at the dream world's gate, where she and Yumeji confront forces threatening both realms. After restoring balance, she bids farewell with a kiss, returning to her gatekeeper duties. Though the separation erases most human memories of dream demons, Yumeji retains their experiences, inspiring him to write a novel titled "Yumekui Merry." Merry's legacy persists through this chronicle and the enduring, if subconscious, bonds with those she befriended.
