Description
Kyōsuke Nanbu debuted in the Super Robot Wars series within Super Robot Wars Compact 2 as a protagonist. He survived a catastrophic shuttle crash in his youth, the sole survivors being himself and Excellen Browning, whom he protected from falling debris. This event bestowed upon him an "inhuman luck," repeatedly demonstrated by escaping fatal situations, such as a Wildraubtier prototype test explosion that left him only slightly injured.
Recruited into the Earth Federation Army, he joined the ATX Team under Sanger Zonvolt. Kyōsuke piloted the PTX-003C Alteisen, a heavily armored real robot specialized for close combat and uniquely suited to his piloting style, though its impractical design hindered others from operating it effectively. Following Sanger Zonvolt's defection during the Divine Crusaders War, Kyōsuke permanently assumed command of the ATX Team. His combat philosophy centers on aggressive head-on assaults and counterattacks, leveraging the Alteisen's heavy armor and close-range arsenal, including the signature "Revolving Stake" pile bunker.
Outside battle, Kyōsuke presents a stoic and reserved demeanor, often seeming emotionally detached. This contrasts sharply with his intensely hot-blooded and determined presence on the battlefield. He frequently employs gambling metaphors like "I don't mind betting on tough odds," reflecting his willingness to stake his life in high-risk engagements. His relationship with Excellen Browning is central; while he publicly dismisses her flirtatious advances, he harbors profound devotion. Threats to her safety trigger fierce protectiveness, evidenced when he shattered Einst mind control over her during their conflict.
Key rivalries shape his journey: with Ryusei Date of the SRX Team during the Divine Crusaders War, and later with Axel Almer of the Shadow Mirror faction. A pivotal duel against Axel critically damaged the Alteisen, necessitating its upgrade into the Alteisen Riese. This enhanced unit retained its predecessor's close-combat specialization but required a Tesla Drive to manage its increased weight. During the Einst crisis, Kyōsuke was targeted as a potential "Adam" for the aliens' world-rebuilding plan, alongside their artificial clone, Alfimi. The Einst manipulated Excellen into opposing him, though he ultimately freed her from their influence.
In Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector, Kyōsuke confronted his Shadow Mirror counterpart: Beowulf, a ruthless pilot of a blue Gespenst Mk-III. Implied to be Einst-possessed, Beowulf had murdered his universe's SRX Team and attempted to reshape the primary universe after crossing dimensions. Kyōsuke and Axel defeated him jointly, though Axel seemingly perished during the battle.
Later, during the ODE Incident (Original Generation Gaiden), Kyōsuke blamed himself for failing to protect Lamia Loveless from Wilhelm von Juergen, leading to a Heroic BSoD. This was resolved after Axel, now redeemed, rescued Lamia. Kyōsuke subsequently vanished into a dimensional rift during training with Ryusei, arriving in the subterranean world of La Gias (2nd Super Robot Wars Original Generation). There, he allied with Masaki Andoh and others against new threats like the Gaia Sabers.
His primary mecha post-upgrade remains the Alteisen Riese, equipped with weapons such as the "Claymore Overlord" alpha strike. He also performs combination attacks with Excellen's Rein Weissritter, notably the "Rampage Ghost."
