Description
As one of the three Gym Leaders at Striaton City Gym in Unova, Chili operates alongside his brothers Cilan and Cress, specializing in Fire-type Pokémon. He battles trainers who chose Snivy as their starter, awarding the Trio Badge upon victory. His initial team features Pansear, which evolves into Simisear in later appearances.
Chili displays a fiery, competitive, and hot-tempered personality, prioritizing offensive battle tactics. These methods cause consecutive losses as a Gym Leader, prompting frustration and his departure from Striaton City for independent training. During his journey, he reunites with Cilan in Driftveil City and challenges him to test his progress. After losing and blaming Pansear for the defeat, the Pokémon runs away, revealing their strained relationship.
Upon reconciling with Pansear, Chili accepts Cilan’s observation of their shared passionate, gluttonous, and quick-tempered natures. Guided by Cilan, they expand Pansear’s move set beyond Fire-type attacks, mastering Solar Beam to counter Water-types. This training culminates in victory against Ash’s Oshawott, reinforcing Chili’s "best defense is a good offense" philosophy. He returns to Striaton Gym with a refined battle style, resolved to open Unova’s first dedicated Fire-type Gym.
Chili later faces Morana alongside Cress when she challenges for control of the Gym. He rashly wagers ownership on the battle’s outcome. After losing, they enlist Cilan’s help to protect the Gym; Cilan secures it by defeating Morana. Chili and Cress manage the Gym until Cilan’s eventual return.
His primary Pokémon, Pansear and later Simisear, mirrors his determination and temper. Their bond strengthens through shared experiences, including mastering Solar Beam and reconciling after conflicts.
