Description
Martel, a pivotal half-elven figure in ancient lore, was once revered as a goddess in Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. Historical accounts place her life over 4,000 years ago as the elder sister of Mithos Yggdrasill. Following their mother's absence, she raised Mithos, demonstrating a consistently protective and nurturing nature towards him and their companions. Her driving conviction was the peaceful coexistence of all races. Martel contracted Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium, a rare illness connected to her Cruxis Crystal, which significantly weakened her despite eventual recovery.

Her life ended during the ancient Kharlan War when a human traitor killed her. Martel's soul endured within her Cruxis Crystal, enabling Mithos to employ the Eternal Sword. He fused her consciousness into the Great Seed, the core of the Giant Kharlan Tree, seeking to preserve her existence. Sustaining this required vast mana, leading Mithos to found the Church of Martel and initiate the Journey of Regeneration. He manipulated the bloodlines of both worlds for millennia, orchestrating unions to cultivate a vessel matching Martel's mana signature—culminating in Colette Brunel's birth.

Revival efforts awakened Martel's consciousness within Colette's body. However, Martel rejected Mithos's methods, condemning the suffering they inflicted. A Rune Crest expelled her from Colette, forcing her return to dormancy within the Great Seed. This event fractured Mithos's sanity. Later, the Great Seed germinated into a new World Tree. Martel's soul merged with countless others, including sacrificed Chosen, forming the Spirit of Mana. This collective guardian entity bears Martel's name and appearance, with her identity as one component and her ideals of harmony resonating within it.

Separate narratives depict temporal displacement bringing an earlier version of Martel into events predating her death. This Martel learned her fate and witnessed the consequences of Mithos's future actions. During this displacement, malevolent forces exploited her link to World Trees, nearly overwhelming her will with the collective anguish of failed Chosen. Bonds with her companions, particularly her fiancé Yuan Ka-Fai, empowered her resistance. Yuan's emotional appeal aided her in retaining individuality while harboring the souls until the true Spirit of Mana awakened.
