Description
Originally Gonzaemon Kato, captain of the pirate ship Bentenmaru, Ironbeard staged his own death via apparent food poisoning. This deception facilitated his rebirth as an imperial pirate, operating the warship Parabellum under Queen Utolamela Christie's direct command. He assumed this role following a secret meeting with the Queen at Port Seruna, accepting her request to become her agent in exchange for imperial privileges.
As Ironbeard, he shrouds his face with a black mask extending into his beard, dyes his hair black with spiked protrusions, and dons a red cape featuring a golden skull insignia on the left shoulder – the emblem of imperial piracy. This contrasts his original appearance: long orange/brown hair, a beard, and a captain's uniform with blue cuffs and a caped coat. In his Ironbeard persona, he cultivates a stern, serious demeanor, favoring theatrical speeches and dramatic entrances, such as deploying an oversized holographic projection of himself during ship confrontations.
His strategic interventions shape pirate conflicts. Commanding the Parabellum during the Pirate Hunter arc, he repels the pirate-hunting vessel Grand Cross, shielding the Bentenmaru and Big Catch. Later, he retrieves Quartz Christie from the Pirate's Nest, encountering his daughter Marika Kato—now captain of the Bentenmaru—and questioning her perception of the future. He also orchestrates a crew swap between twin helmsmen Kane and Shane McDougal to evaluate pirate loyalties amidst looming choices between traditional privateering and imperial service.
Ironbeard's relationships are intricate. He observes Marika incognito during her early captaincy, privately admiring her resolve while concealing their familial tie. His dynamic with ex-wife Ririka Kato involves mutual, albeit masked, respect; she aids him during the Quartz extraction but declines his offer for permanent crew membership. His allegiance to Queen Utolamela remains absolute, fulfilling missions like safeguarding Princess Gruier Serenity, whom he entrusted with his ID ring years earlier. Gruier inadvertently reveals his true identity to Marika, though Ironbeard maintains his facade.
Beyond the anime, the manga "Abyss of Hyperspace" references him when Marika discusses her father, prompting Ironbeard to sneeze aboard the Parabellum. In the video game "Fever Mouretsu Pirates," he appears as an adversary, engaging Marika in swordfights or ship battles based on player choices.
His leadership and tactical acumen are well-regarded. Commanding the Bentenmaru, he maintained an undefeated record in training battles against the Imperial fleet by strategically surrendering before defeat. This foresight and his willingness to manipulate perceptions underscore his pragmatic approach to piracy and legacy.
