Description
Solomon Muto, known as Sugoroku Mutou in Japanese media, is Yugi Muto's grandfather and proprietor of the Kame Game shop. His adventurous youth saw him travel the world as a gambler and gaming master, famously vowing to trade his suit for overalls if he ever lost—a promise he kept after an unspecified defeat, leading him to open the shop.
During a youthful expedition to Egypt's Valley of the Kings, Solomon hired guides Ahmet and Mushara to locate the Nameless Pharaoh's tomb. The tomb contained deadly traps, including one requiring a left-foot-first step as a sign of respect; Mushara ignored this and was slain by statues, while Ahmet was later devoured by a monster. Solomon survived through his own skill and intervention by Pharaoh Atem's spirit, discovering the Millennium Puzzle in the final chamber. He later gifted the Puzzle to Yugi, unintentionally binding the Pharaoh's spirit to his grandson.
Solomon acquired the "Blue-Eyes White Dragon" card from his friend Arthur Hawkins following a perilous incident in Egypt. Trapped in a catacomb during another expedition, they dueled for their remaining water; Solomon surrendered to let Arthur drink, though both were rescued soon after. Arthur gave him the card in gratitude. This card became a significant element, notably when Seto Kaiba tore it after defeating Solomon in a duel, hospitalizing him.
Solomon frequently encountered danger. His soul was sealed in a card by Maximillion Pegasus during Duelist Kingdom and freed after Yugi's victory. He later competed in Kaiba's Grand Championship tournament under the alias "Apdnarg Otum" (Grandpa Muto backward), using an Ancient-themed Rock monster deck, but lost to Joey Wheeler. During Battle City, he supported Joey's duels and was briefly incapacitated by Yami Bakura.
In *Yu-Gi-Oh! GX*, Solomon appeared when card images faded globally, distressing children in his shop. Later, he guided Jaden Yuki's group through Domino City but was kidnapped by Thunder and Frost; Jaden rescued him, and Solomon subsequently aided their efforts, including promising to contact Kaiba to restore Sarina's consciousness.
His role in *Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time* saw him attending Pegasus' tournament with Yugi. He witnessed Paradox's attack using corrupted monsters ("Stardust Dragon," "Cyber End Dragon," "Rainbow Dragon") and was killed alongside Pegasus and others, leaving Yugi as the sole survivor. Yugi discovered Solomon's bandana in the wreckage. The Crimson Dragon sent Yugi 30 minutes back in time, enabling him, Yami Yugi, Jaden, and Yusei Fudo to defeat Paradox. Their victory erased the altered timeline, preventing Solomon's death.
In non-canon appearances like *Capsule Monsters*, Solomon accompanied Alex Brisbane to find Alexander the Great's pyramid. Transported into a game board, he used "Summoned Skull" and later "Curse of Dragon" to assist Yugi's group through trials before escaping the collapsing pyramid.
Solomon is a knowledgeable mentor who taught Yugi and Joey Wheeler the "Heart of the Cards" philosophy. Despite his age, he retained a playful attraction to younger women, occasionally causing minor conflicts. His legacy centers on fostering Yugi's growth and preserving the Millennium Puzzle's history.
