Description
Sugoroku Mutō, also known as Solomon Muto in select English adaptations, features prominently in *Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time*. He attends Maximillion Pegasus's Domino City duel tournament with his grandson Yugi Mutō. During the event, the antagonist Paradox attacks using corrupted duel monsters—Stardust Dragon, Cyber End Dragon, and Rainbow Dragon. This assault kills Pegasus, Sugoroku, and many bystanders, leaving Yugi alone. Yugi later finds his grandfather's bandana in the rubble. The intervention of the Crimson Dragon sends Yugi, Jaden Yuki, and Yusei Fudo thirty minutes back in time, enabling them to stop Paradox and prevent Sugoroku's death.
In his youth, Sugoroku was a world-renowned gaming master. During the 1960s, he led an expedition to Egypt's Valley of the Kings, targeting the Tomb of the Nameless Pharaoh. Inside, he faced deadly game-based traps, like statues that attacked those failing to step forward with their left foot as a sign of respect. His companions, Mushura and Ahmet, perished—Mushura triggering the statues and Ahmet devoured by a tomb guardian. Sugoroku was saved by the spirit of the Nameless Pharaoh and retrieved the Millennium Puzzle from the inner chamber, later giving it to Yugi.
Older Sugoroku operated the Kame Game shop in Domino City. He gifted Yugi the Millennium Puzzle, cautioning about its dangerous legacy linked to archaeologists' mysterious deaths. He owned a rare Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, a gift from an American gamer, which Seto Kaiba sought to steal. This led to Kaiba's defeat by Dark Yugi in a Shadow Game.
Sugoroku endured multiple perils. During Duelist Kingdom, Kaiba defeated him, tore up his Blue-Eyes White Dragon card, and hospitalized him. Pegasus later imprisoned his soul in a card, requiring Yugi's victory for his release. In Battle City, he supported Yugi's friends and aided an injured Bakura. He also competed in the KaibaCorp Grand Championship as "Mask the Rock" ("Apdnarg Otum" in English), using an ancient Rock-type monster deck before losing to Katsuya Jonouchi.
In *Yu-Gi-Oh! GX*, Sugoroku appeared briefly. During the Sacred Beasts incident, he comforted children in his shop as their cards lost images due to energy drainage. Later, he hosted Duel Academy students on a Domino City field trip, recounting the card-fading incident, until kidnapped by the Society of Light. Jaden Yuki and friends rescued him.
Non-canonically, in the *Capsule Monsters* spin-off, Sugoroku was transported into a game board world while searching for Alexander the Great's pyramid. There, he partnered with Summoned Skull, assisted Yugi's group by translating trial instructions, and temporarily hosted the benevolent spirit of Alexander the Great's half before returning.
Sugoroku's personality blends wisdom, curiosity, and lightheartedness. He possesses deep knowledge of games and history, mentoring younger duelists like Jonouchi. Despite his age, he shows resilience and protectiveness, defending his Blue-Eyes White Dragon from Kaiba and supporting Yugi. Early manga depictions occasionally included comic relief traits like flirtatious remarks, minimized in later adaptations.
