Description
In the anime "Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 3: Owari Naki Unmei", Hakuryū is the human form of the White Dragon God, a divine being who serves as the guardian and protector of the land known as Kyō. This world is a fantastical version of Kyoto during the Genpei War era, a period marked by the fierce conflict between the Genji and Heike clans.
Hakuryū appears initially as a mysterious and somewhat ethereal boy who encounters the protagonist, Nozomi Kasuga, and her friends in the modern world. In this form, he is depicted as having a pure and innocent personality, which contrasts with his powerful divine nature. His primary motivation is the protection of Kyō, a task at which he is failing due to the rampant release of vengeful spirits known as onryō by the Heike clan. The presence of these spirits has greatly weakened his powers, leaving him unable to safeguard the land on his own.
Because of his weakened state, Hakuryū uses his remaining power to transport Nozomi across time and space to Kyō. He reveals that she possesses the inherent ability to become the Priestess of the White Dragon (Hakuryū no Miko), a sacred role with the power to seal away the onryō and restore balance to the world. His role in the story is thus as a catalyst for the entire plot; he is the one who bestows upon Nozomi her critical mission and grants her the ability to seal the spirits. He is deeply attached to the priestess, constantly worrying about her safety and well-being as she risks her life on the battlefield. Throughout the narrative, Hakuryū observes the struggles of Nozomi and her eight protectors, the Hachiyō, with a sense of care and dependence, as his own fate is tied to their success.
While his powers are diminished, Hakuryū still possesses notable abilities. He holds authority over time and space, capable of sending individuals between the modern world and the war-torn Kyō. He also has the power to grant Nozomi the ability to "overwrite fate," allowing her to return to key moments in the past to change tragic outcomes. Furthermore, as a dragon god, he has a deep and sensitive perception of the emotions and feelings of the priestess and her chosen guardians, sensing their hopes, fears, and convictions. His character development is subtle, centered on his growing hope and reliance on Nozomi as she proves herself capable of shouldering the destiny he has placed upon her.
