Jack Rakan, famed as "The Thousand Blades," "The Man Who Cannot Die," and "The Ultimate Hard Worker," belongs to the Hellas race. He possesses a tall, heavily muscular frame with darkly tanned skin, piercing golden eyes, and long spiky blonde hair typically tied with a red bandana. Numerous battle scars cover his body, including distinctive magical stitching on his biceps from arms destroyed in a past clash with the Life-Maker. His origins trace back to a brutal childhood as a young slave gladiator in the Hellas Empire, roughly four decades before the main story. Surviving near-fatal ordeals, he rose to become the arena's top and "invincible" champion, winning his freedom. Post-retirement, he fought as a mercenary in real conflicts, forging his legendary status and titles through relentless effort, not innate talent. He later crossed paths with Nagi Springfield’s group, Ala Rubra, initially hired to oppose them during Ostia’s invasion, but ultimately defected to join as a core member. Rakan displays a bombastic, greedy, and often lackadaisical personality, refusing unpaid work and indulging in provocative antics like stealing opponents’ underwear to incite rage. Despite this, he holds firm moral principles, particularly opposing the use of young girls as soldiers. He exudes absolute confidence in his power, claiming no weaknesses, yet harbors a deep, instinctive fear at the cellular level toward the Mage of the Beginning (Life-Maker), whom he warned Nagi against confronting. In combat, he savors powerful foes but frequently employs overwhelming force or theatrically named techniques like "Eternal Negi Fever." Beneath the bravado, he shows care for allies, such as genuine concern that he might have killed Negi during their duel. Decades of combat honed Rakan's abilities. He wields the Pactio artifact "Armiger Milliplex," enabling spontaneous creation of myriad weapons or armor—from thousands of blades to skyscraper-sized swords—and techniques like "Zankanken" (Warship Sword Cutter). His physical prowess encompasses moon-level striking strength, sub-relativistic speed, Class K lifting capacity, and potent regeneration demonstrated by reattaching severed limbs mid-battle. He blends martial mastery with magic, utilizing fire, wind, gravity manipulation, energy absorption, and chi-based defenses like "Kiai Boukou." He also possesses tactical genius, rapidly analyzing and replicating advanced techniques after minimal exposure, such as Eishun’s barrier-negating "Zanmaken Ni-No-Tachi" or Albireo Imma’s dimension-shattering "Great Dimensional Smash." While he learned Evangeline’s forbidden "Magia Erebea," he rarely uses it due to compatibility risks. His narrative centers on mentoring Negi Springfield. Meeting Negi in the Magical World, he offers to teach an ultimate technique for a fee but ends up saving him from an assassin without payment, becoming his unpaid instructor. He trains Negi in Magia Erebea and aids his missions, including battles in Ostia. During the Ostia Festival tournament, he allies with Kagetarou against Negi’s team, testing Negi's resolve in a brutal duel where victory is promised to reveal Nagi’s secrets. Though initially dominant, the fight ends in a draw after Negi absorbs his energy using Magia Erebea’s advanced form, cementing mutual respect. Later, confronting Fate Averruncus at the Governor’s Ball, Rakan battles Fate’s ministers only to be ambushed by the Life-Maker, who severs his limbs and imprisons him in power-suppressing armor. Despite a valiant struggle, the Code of the Lifemaker erases him. He temporarily reconstitutes through sheer willpower to deliver final guidance to Negi before dissipating. During the assault on Cosmo Entelecheia, Rakan resurfaces permanently, crediting his return to boredom, fighting spirit, and Asuna Kagurazaka’s world-manipulating powers. He aids the protagonists by defeating the Ancient Dragon Vrkso Nagasya and providing tactical support against the Mage of the Beginning.
