Description
Shinnosuke Nohara, called Shin-chan, is a five-year-old boy living in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture. The character evolved from Yoshito Usui's earlier manga character Shinnosuke Nikaido in "Darakuya Store Monogatari" before leading his own series. Unverified accounts propose potential inspiration from a real child named Shinnosuke Nohara who reportedly died in a car accident saving his younger sister, his grieving mother's sketches possibly influencing Usui; this remains an unconfirmed theory among others about his origin.

Shin-chan embodies mischievousness, curiosity, and shamelessness, often engaging in socially inappropriate acts like performing his "Buri Buri" dance (also known as "Buttock Alien" or "wiggly wiggly" dance) or his "Mr. Elephant" impression. Despite these immature antics, he sometimes displays startling wisdom, philosophical insights, or moments of maturity, sighing "Paradise, paradise" like an adult at hot springs or showing concern for others' feelings. His speech is idiosyncratic, featuring frequent malapropisms (e.g., "promotion" for "promise"), mixed greetings like "okonban gozaimasu," and unconventional pronouns like "ora" for himself and "hoi" for yes.

He exhibits surprising proficiency in running, surfing, kendo, baseball, football, fishing, skiing, and swimming. He avidly follows the superhero "Action Mask" (or "Action Kamen") and loves the snack "Chocobi," while strongly disliking green peppers. His stubbornness, laziness, gluttony, and brazenness are described as inherited primarily from his mother, though his habit of flirting with older women mirrors his father Hiroshi. This innocent attraction drives his persistent pursuit of college student Nanako Oohara, with no interest in girls his age.

Within his family, Shin-chan shares a teasing yet deeply affectionate bond with his mother Misae, worrying about her during events like hospital visits. He bonds with his father Hiroshi over their shared interest in women, though Shin-chan frequently reports Hiroshi's misdeeds to Misae. He consistently protects his younger sister Himawari, involving her in adventures while ensuring her safety. The family dog, Shiro, was rescued by Shin-chan but suffers neglect due to his forgetfulness.

Among friends, Shin-chan maintains a close but contentious friendship with Toru Kazama (whom he addresses by last name), their bond evident when offering emotional support during loneliness or separation. He regularly interacts with kindergarten classmates Masao Sato (nicknamed "Onigiri"), Nene Sakurada, and Bo Suzuki as part of their "Kasukabe Defence Force" (KB), a group central to cinematic adventures.

In the film "Crayon Shin-chan: Great Adventure in Henderland," magical antagonists Joma and Makao kidnap his parents, testing his character. Initially reluctant to help the enchanted doll Toppema Mappet retrieve stolen magical cards, he commits fully after the abduction. He uses the cards to summon imaginary allies like Action Mask, Kantam Robot, and Buriburizaemon (his personal imaginary character), showing resourcefulness and courage against villains Cre.G.Mad and Chokirin. His actions defeat the antagonists and rescue his parents, revealing his deep devotion to family beneath his rebellious exterior. This adventure highlights recurring traits: accidental problem-solving, kindness beneath mischief, and unexpected responsibility in genuine crisis.
