Description
Yuji Sakai’s life as a mundane high schooler plunges into the extraordinary when he learns he is a Torch—a fading remnant of a deceased human sustained by the enigmatic Treasure Tool Midnight Lost Child (Reiji Maigo) embedded within him. This artifact replenishes his Power of Existence nightly, granting near-immortality. Defying the selfish tendencies typical of Torches, Yuji’s inherent kindness drives him to prioritize others, even sacrificing his own energy to mend classroom damages. This selfless act challenges the Flame Haze Shana’s understanding of Torches, sparking curiosity and shifting her view of him.

Designated a Mystes, Yuji becomes pivotal in clashes between Flame Hazes and Crimson Denizens. Though untrained in combat, his analytical mind and unflappable demeanor make him a tactical ally. He gradually masters abilities like the Power of Unrestraint and silver-black flames, evading attacks from seasoned fighters like Shana and Wilhelmina. His bond with Shana evolves from pragmatic partnership to unspoken romance, complicated by his obliviousness to her feelings and those of classmate Kazumi Yoshida.

A seismic shift occurs when Yuji merges with the Snake of the Festival, a Crimson Lord seeking to forge Xanadu—a world to end eternal strife. The fusion warps his personality into ruthlessness. He callously rejects Kazumi, strips Shana of her powers, and manipulates allies to further Bal Masqué’s agenda, believing Shana would prioritize duty over their bond. This miscalculation culminates in a brutal confrontation.

During the final clash, Yuji’s conviction fractures upon recognizing Shana’s suppressed emotions. Defeated by her resolve, he embraces her love and deploys the unrestricted spell Grammatica to reclaim his humanity. Post-battle, he assists in rebuilding Misaki City before departing with Shana to Xanadu, determined to mentor Denizens in coexistence. His arc weaves self-sacrifice with personal longing, resolving in acceptance of his dual identity.

Background notes reveal his name honors a deceased twin, reflecting his parents’ wish for endurance. This ties to his fatalistic optimism and drive to leave lasting legacies through heroism. Physically, he sports dark hair, a fair complexion, and stands 165 cm. Post-merger, his hair elongates into a Dragon Tail, and he dons red-black armor (Bakuyagai), later repurposed as a scarf or bolo tie—a vestige of his transformed self.
