Description
Shana hails from a powerful Japanese family, orphaned as a child. She entered a contract with the Crimson Lord Alastor, the "Flame of Heaven," becoming a Flame Haze charged with balancing the human world and the Crimson Realm. This contract halted her aging, leaving her with the appearance of an 11- to 12-year-old girl, standing 141 cm tall with jet-black hair and dark brown eyes. When invoking her powers, her hair and eyes blaze crimson, surrounded by fluttering embers. She initially wore all-black combat attire, including a Yogasa trench coat, later adopting a Misaki City high school uniform during her stay in the city, using the Yogasa as a combat cape.

Initially nameless and known only by her title "Flame-Haired Burning-Eyed Hunter," she viewed humans as expendable tools, focused solely on her duty. She received the name "Shana" from Yuji Sakai, a Mystes bearing the Treasure Tool Reiji Maigo, who named her after her sword, Nietono no Shana. Early interactions with Yuji challenged her worldview, especially his sacrifice of his own Power of Existence to save others. This act, combined with his bravery against the Crimson Denizen Friagne, led her to recognize him as a person, not merely a Torch, marking the start of her emotional growth.

Her personality evolved from cold and nihilistic toward increasing humanity. She developed a fondness for sweets, particularly melon bread, and frequently used the phrase "Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" when flustered or embarrassed. Socially inexperienced due to her isolated upbringing, she struggled with concepts like love and jealousy. Romantic feelings for Yuji emerged gradually, causing conflict with classmate Kazumi Yoshida, her rival for his affection. Through guidance from Yuji's mother, Chigusa Sakai, and eventual mutual respect with Kazumi, Shana learned empathy and social nuance. Her combat style matured, shifting from reckless charges to strategic cooperation with allies like Wilhelmina Carmel and Margery Daw.

As a Flame Haze, Shana wielded the sword Nietono no Shana, manipulated flames, flew with fiery wings, and sensed Power of Existence. Her unique capacity to contain Alastor's full manifestation without disintegration earned her the epithet "The Great One," stemming from latent potential to alter history noted by Alastor. She faced significant trauma when Yuji merged with the Snake of the Festival, a Crimson Realm deity leading Bal Masqué. Under the Snake's influence, Yuji defeated Shana and stripped her powers, but she regained resolve to confront him. In the final conflict, she opposed the Snake's plan to create Xanadu—a realm for Crimson Denizens—fearing its collapse would destabilize all worlds. She compromised by adding a law forbidding Denizens from consuming humans in Xanadu. After Yuji's humanity was restored, they departed together to ensure peaceful coexistence in the new realm.
