Mirao Kyao is Daba Myroad's childhood friend and traveling companion from the outset of their journey across Koam's wastelands. He engages in early skirmishes against bandits, including incidents where Daba pledges to return a stolen cash card to Amandara Kamandara. Kyao initially considers joining the Posaydal Army, reflecting his indecisiveness. His role often provides comic relief, marked by an '80s-inspired blonde pompadour and frequent slapstick misfortune, such as enduring physical abuse or facing the consequences of misguided actions like stealing the cash card only to find it frozen. Despite this, Kyao demonstrates unwavering loyalty to Daba throughout the conflict with the Poseidal Empire.
Kyao matures significantly during the rebellion, particularly through mecha development and combat. He orchestrates the theft of the prototype Heavy Metal Amon Duule Stack and kidnaps its creator, Mesh Maker. Recognizing Mesh's rebel sympathies, Kyao collaborates with him to study the L-Gaim's technology, resulting in the creation of the advanced L-Gaim Mk-II. This unit features transformation capabilities, a self-learning bio-computer, and a powerful generator enabling sustained Buster Launcher use. Kyao pilots various Heavy Metals like the Stack, D-Sserd, and Lista, though his piloting skills are typically overshadowed by aces like Daba or Gavlet Gablae. His technical contributions remain vital to the rebellion's progress on planets like Trydetol and Mizum.
In the conflict's later stages, Kyao continues supporting Daba and the rebels. He participates in critical missions such as Operation Stardust, involving asteroid bombardment of the Poseidal capital, Sveto. His loyalty persists despite interpersonal tensions, including unrequited romantic interest in Fanneria Amu, who consistently rejects him in favor of Daba. Kyao endures through the final battles against Giwaza and Amandara Kamandara, culminating in the rebellion's victory. He witnesses Daba's withdrawal to care for his brain-damaged sister.
Kyao also appears in supplemental media like the OVA *Full Metal Soldier*, participating in battles on Trydetol against a radical Posaydal soldier piloting a uniquely controlled Heavy Metal. His character development across all media emphasizes evolution from a hesitant, comical figure to a dedicated technical asset within the rebellion, maintaining his foundational role as Daba's steadfast friend.
