Description
Sniff is a central character from Tove Jansson's Moomin stories, appearing across various adaptations like the anime *Tanoshii Moomin Ikka: Bōken Nikki*. He is an anthropomorphic creature resembling a kangaroo or bandicoot, with large, pointy ears and a long tail. His biological parents are the Muddler and the Fuzzy, but he was separated from them as a child. The Moomins later found and adopted him during their search for the missing Moominpappa, making him an adopted brother to Moomintroll and Little My.

Sniff exhibits a timid, greedy personality with an intense fascination for wealth and valuable objects, especially shiny items. He frequently concocts schemes to gain riches quickly, though these plans rarely succeed. This fixation on possessions often clashes with Snufkin's philosophical indifference to material things. Despite his flaws stemming from childlike selfishness and thoughtlessness, Sniff lacks malice. He shows cowardice in danger, often withdrawing first from group adventures due to fear or fatigue, and possesses a pronounced fear of water, avoiding sea-related activities.

Throughout the series, Sniff sometimes overcomes his fears when motivated by potential treasure. His relationships within the Moomin family are significant, particularly his bond with the supportive Moominmamma. In *Bōken Nikki* and other media, he participates in adventures but struggles with laziness, boredom, and commitment. His role often involves comic relief, with adaptations occasionally exaggerating his cowardice or selfishness beyond the original books, such as adding an ocean phobia.

Sniff first appeared unnamed as "the little creature" in *The Moomins and the Great Flood*. He gained prominence in books like *Comet in Moominland* and *Finn Family Moomintroll* before taking minor roles in later stories. He reunited with his biological parents in *The Exploits of Moominpappa*. Anime adaptations, including *Bōken Nikki*, integrate him into new storylines while maintaining his core traits. His attachment to possessions includes items like his cuddly toy dog, Cedric, featured in *Tales from Moominvalley* and the game *Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley*.
