Description
Miyake Shinobu is Ataru Moroboshi's childhood friend and classmate in Tomobiki High School's Class 2-4, with their relationship tracing back to kindergarten and initial mutual romantic feelings. She was Ataru's girlfriend before Lum's arrival and promised to marry him if he won the game of tag against the Oni invaders. Ataru's victory exclamation—"Now I can get married!"—was misinterpreted by Lum as a proposal, triggering Lum's engagement to Ataru and fracturing Shinobu's relationship with him. Despite Ataru's repeated attempts to rekindle their romance, Lum's interventions and Shinobu's deepening disillusionment thwarted reconciliation.

Shinobu displays a dual personality: typically appearing as a neat, sweet, and fragile teenage girl, yet unleashing Herculean super-strength when enraged, often by Ataru's lecherous actions or frustrations involving Lum. This strength erupts in violent outbursts like hurling school desks. The third movie, *Remember My Love*, implies her power fades when Lum departs Earth, suggesting a link between her strength and Lum's presence. Her force targets Ataru frequently but also shields classmates during crises.

After Shūtarō Mendō transfers to Tomobiki High, Shinobu redirects her affections to him, joining his female fan club. Occasional dates and near-kisses fail to solidify their bond due to Mendō's greater fascination with Lum and his eventual arranged engagement to Asuka Mizunokoji. Shinobu's romantic endeavors with Mendō end in disappointment, cementing her pattern of attracting "monsters and perverts." She relinquishes aspirations with both Ataru and Mendō, resigning herself to becoming an "old maid."

Her arc concludes upon meeting Inaba, an employee of the Fate Production Management Bureau. Their initial encounter involves retrieving a space-time flower requiring "true love as fertilizer." Inaba's admission that his primary motive was spending time with Shinobu sparks the flower's bloom, forging mutual affection and a stable relationship, often portrayed through shared tea in coffee houses. Inaba ends Shinobu's "horrible luck with men."

Shinobu interacts with others by treating Ryūnosuke Fujinami as a female friend after initial gender confusion, supporting Ryūnosuke's feminization efforts, and evolving from hostility toward Lum into a neutral, occasionally amicable dynamic. Her Libra zodiac sign (birthday between September 22–October 23) narratively emphasizes compatibility attempts with Mendō's Aries sign.
