Description
Rika Akiba, a 17-year-old girl, has spent most of her life hospitalized due to a congenital heart valve condition—a genetic illness that claimed her father during his own surgery. This prolonged confinement created profound isolation, leaving her friendless before meeting fellow patients.

Physically, she is short with long hair extending to her lower back. Her hair appears purple in the original novel and manga illustrations but black in the anime adaptation, consistently styled with two white bobby pins on the left side. She has purple eyes and wears white pajamas with pink slippers during hospitalization.

Initially, Rika displays a rude, easily angered, and bossy demeanor, especially toward Yuichi Ezaki, whom she frequently orders around. This harsh exterior conceals deep sensitivity to others' words and actions, with her isolation and lack of social experience fueling this defensiveness. She finds solace in Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s books, reflecting her intellectual retreat.

Her relationship with Yuichi starts contentiously when he lies about reading Akutagawa. She grants conditional forgiveness in exchange for his obedience. Gradually, their bond deepens into mutual affection. Yuichi helps her experience life outside the hospital, including a visit to Mount Cannon—a site tied to her father’s memory—and his school, where she borrows a uniform. These excursions carry physical risks due to her fragility.

Dr. Gorō Natsume, her primary physician for six years, shares a close bond with Rika; she followed him when he transferred hospitals. This connection strains her romance with Yuichi, as Dr. Natsume—whose wife died from a similar heart condition—attempts to sabotage their relationship to spare Yuichi future grief.

As her health deteriorates, Rika collapses during an outing, confronting her mortality and voicing fears intensified by her attachment to Yuichi. Facing low-survival-odds surgery, she reflects on her father’s fate and limited time. Though the surgery succeeds, her prognosis remains terminal, granting only a few more years. She and Yuichi commit to cherishing their remaining time together.

Her motivations center on reconciling her father’s legacy, facing her mortality, and seizing ordinary experiences denied by illness. She evolves from isolation toward emotional vulnerability, openly sharing fears and desires with Yuichi.
